Hammer ID Time...OR, Maybe Clamp ID Time?? Please help me ID this anomaly.

I picked this up yard saling last weekend, and have no idea what it was intended for? Has a hammer look, but also splits at the top via wing nuts and studs. Pretty weird. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I also think that's a clamp, not a hammer. Maybe for leatherwork? I could see it being used to hold a couple pieces for stitching. I don't know if you'd hold it between your legs or what though.

I could've seen that being for saddlery etc.

With the recess in the one side I can see it holding a plane iron and then is used as a adze or a scraper.

With those wimpy little thumbscrews, I would not call it a clamp, but it does clamp something, the plane blade makes more sense than leather, as most leather clamping devices have quick actuations, as you move them often, like a sewing horse

It might be some type of stitching clamp/vise for stitching heavy leather or sail cloth.
Or for stitching rope to sails.
A guy who used to be it told me that stitching rope into sails was hand done back in the day, and brutal on the hands.

I've seen similar things for hide scraping, too.
