Just did a search and couldn't find anything.

I'm looking for a way to organize hammers inside of a toolbox drawer. I've seen some very nice hanging methods, but I was thinking about standing them up on their side like some of the plier racks. Any ideas?

Re: Hammer Orginization

I just have them laying in a drawer, nothing fancy. All the heads are on the outside and the handles are staggered.

The title got me to thinking, "he must be worried about his hammers organizing, joining a union, getting rules and a shop steward"................. Oh, back to reality, he wants to know how to lay the hammers in a drawer................ (some people do hang them up).

I've added a deadblow to the drawer since this pic.

These body hammers are in a 2" drawer so they can't be stacked, I have them packed in pretty tight and have 2 more to squeeze in. I might have to move some of the dollies to another drawer.

The ball pein hammers tend to lay on top of each other, there are 3 more hammers in this drawer now.

If you have some old sanding sponges or thick foam around, you could make a "well" in the material to hold the hammer on its side and keep it organized.

That's a great idea! Might look into this.

Right now, I don't have enough drawer space to lay them all flat without having them piled 3-4 deep.

Jack Olsen has a nice hammer cabinet. Check out the 12-gauge garage thread, or he may post in here too.

And, my first thought was to post what Charles in GA posted above. I can just picture all the hammers marching...

Yep. Hammers are a pain in the neck when you've got to fish them out of a drawer. I prefer having them right in my line of sight.

Goofy? Yeah, a little. But with the easy access, I don't end up using the same hammer over and over again just because it's already out.

I like the idea that you put the 'precision adjustment' hammer as the first one in line!

Mine pretty much all lay flat in a couple drawers. Claw hammers and the like in one drawer and dead-blow and rubber mallets in another.

The first thing I notice with Jack's cabinet is that all the only 'heavy' hammer he has in the door is closest to the hinge. Put that big fine adjustment tool where the big bouncy adjustment tool and the door or hinge is likely to come apart in a pretty short time...

Jack, you think of everything!

I was cleaning out some trash in the garage (tomorrow is trash day) and as I was walking some stuff out to the curb, I had a scrap piece of 2x4 in my hand and got an idea.

I drilled a few holes in it and here's what I got.

I think I might look into this a little more. I'd like to lay the hammers with the heads towards the back of the drawer and the handles towards the front. (the 2x4 just happened to fit this way) I've got about 5-6 more hammers to fit in there. I could probably put the holes closer together too.

A piece on the right side would allow you to fit all the hammers and have the handles in the middle alternating directions. Personally, my hammers are in a shorter drawer, puzzle pieced together on their side. This allows me to use my only deep drawer for my cordless power tools.
