old freezer shelf, actually fit the drawer perfectly whole, but i cut it in half. the left edge of the rack has funny bends, so there is a little wasted space there, but wanted to leave the width in tact to touch the sides. fit the handles in, then bent the tabs on the other end up to support it better. still have the other half to use for something, but the slots are a bit wide for pliers.

That's a good idea. Hammers are one of those tools that are difficult to store. I use mine everyday, so like you, I have to keep them easily accessible. I have chosen to dedicate a drawer to them as well.

suppose i could fit a lot more if i just tossed them in and piled them on top of each other. only problem is the fat handle on the ball peen on the left and the fat head of the dead blow on the right. i have since moved the dead blows 2 spaces right (large one against side of drawer), so i have a few more slots available for more.

the 2 biggest just fit in the deeper drawer standing up.

Mine are dumped in a spare drawer currently, but that's because the pegboard got all used up. Generally my hammers are all on peg hooks though. That's not bad for a drawer if you have to, but generally hammers are a waste of any other storage.

A good chunk of my ball peen's are on a custom made wall rack in my work room (and most of those are double stacked), another 4 + an engineers Cross Peen are on loops made from insulated 12 Ga Wire, there is over a drawers worth of Body/metal working hammers and dollies, and a dozen sheet metal hammers elsewhere.

(Most of) The rest share an 8 drawer Kennedy roller with my hatchets and one drawer's worth of army shovels.

I spread them out.

Every flat surface has a few hammers on it.

In my shop, I'm never more than an arm's length away from a hammer.

Never seem to be able to find the one I want, when I want it though.

for home use, i probably wouldn't bother with a rack for them, but this is for my work box. need to roll the cabinet around from area to area and hopefully this will be easier to tell if one is missing (left in machine or 'borrowed').

I like your method better than mine. They all just kinda get tossed in the biggest bottom bin...
