Hammer Storage in Tool Box

All i have left in my tool box are deep drawers and my mechanic friend suggested that lay them in the drawer so that the head of the hammers are perpendicular to the drawer floor so that more of them fit.

Does anyone make a rack to do this (like a plyer rack)? I have searched but not found. I was thinking about designing one and having my local shop prototype it for me.

is this something that any of you have done or would be interested in?

If you had enough vertical room you could just use bookends, preferably magnetic based ones?

I just use a piece of heavy wire coiled around a 2" PVC pipe.

Good idea to make one for yourself but i would think making a generic rack for sale would be tough since hammer heads vary in size so much..good idea anyways

Ok, bumping back up with an idea I tried today. Found a large sheet of 2" high density closed cell foam. cut it to size by heating a piece of sheet metal with a torch, then slicing with it. Then I put holes in it by heating a piece of 1-3/4" tube and pushing through, just like butter. I put 8 holes on the back end, and seven on the front end spaced between the 8. Holds 15 hammers with the face in the hole and the handles resting on the foam. Ballpeens sit perfect, but I did notice claw hammers do not balance and would need a smaller hole.

I was thinking of wall mounting all my hammers, either with a series of plastic pipes that you could put them in handle-first, or a narrow rectangle so they could be dropped in.

The foam tray sounds like a pretty good fit for in the drawer. Do you find the drawers can handle the weight of many hammers? How many do you have in there?

Hammers in drawers have always bugged me. Pull on one and everything moves.

I put mine up on the wall on hooks.

X2! This is all that I have in my "beat and pry" drawer:

Part of me wants to replace all the hammers with Estwing (for some reason I've loved them since my Dad got one of their camp axes when I was a kid) or other quality brand hammers of individual manufacturers for each type of hammer and part of me likes having multiple brands for each individual hammer, sourced as the need came up. It kind of tells a story that way.

I'd say put some heavy duty magnetic strips on the front (and back) of the drawer. The "top" of the heads of the hammer would stick to the magnet and not tip or slide.

SP Tools out of australia makes a really good plier and hammer hanger if I remember correctly. Lemme try to find it in their catalog.

I just threw all the ones I hardly use at the bottom of a deep drawer. The ones I do use are on top.

I have a metal box that just fit in the open bottom area of one of my tool boxes,so the hammers that seldom get used are on the bottom and the ones that are used more often are laying on top. I tried using a deep drawer but I found it easier to put the hammers out of the way.

This is how mine are stored and they don't move...well, at least unless I ram & jam the drawer - which I don't.

you just need enough hammers so they hold themselves up. the one laying on its side was too big to put in there standing up but it works good for the rest
