I'd like to see some pics of the way you store your hammers in your tool box. I'm looking for a way to store them on on their sides, not laying flat. Something along the lines of using a dish drain rack to store pliers.

And don't forget, a real mechanic should never have a claw hammer in his/her tool box. - quote from a GJ member I saw once when someone asked a question about hammers.

Lay mine flat but separate them, one drawer hard hammers, another soft hammer and have a 3rd I didn't get a picture of just for BFH's

Maybe I'm a hack but I just throw mine in a drawer... They're hammers. I'm **** about how so many of my tools are stored but hammers just aren't worth special consideration.

I have a claw hammer, drywall hammer, roofing hammer, tack hammer, floor nailer hammer mixed in with my ball pein hammers, mallets, dead blows, mini sledges and engineers hammers in the drawers of my roll-away. My finish hammer and framer live in one belt and my California Framer and other claw hammers in in a tool bucket.I am sure there are other hammers around my house as well.

Apparently said member doesn't deal with crated parts. This real mechanic has a crowbar, claw hammer, and a wonder bar in his box along with some screws and nails plus a bit set for uncrating components and recrating cores.

I also have a framing square and level for doing layouts and measuring up for grade control installations.

I cut a piece of 1" dowel and made two end pieces to hold it up about 2" off the bottom. The hammer heads hang over the dowel and stay put. Set up another dowel on the other side and you can double the capacity.

I am seriously thinking of taking an old wing extension from a table saw and attaching 2x4's. Hanging the hammers vertically, so I can easily see and grab the one I need. Not a drawer solution, but most people I know who use several regularly do it a similar way.

 ... ... altho I hope you use one of those woodworking claw hammers, and not a ball pein ... to tap that very nice little router through the wood. ;);) .. :)

Did something similiar once using a card file cabinet, and a piece of ply with cut outs ... instead of the dowel.

Made things tidier and much more accessible than my usual style of just dumping them in a drawer or shelf.

Now tho ... I prefer having them all, hanging vertical on a double rail, including longer handled sledges etc.

At my home shop I hang them on the peg board. I started doing that when my box wasn't big enough. I like it better than the drawer of hammers.

At work I still have to just throw them in the drawer but I don't have as many there anyway.

All my hammers hang on pegboard, both at the shop and home, but as there are only 3 of us in the shop, and one is my wife, we don't have the need to lock up tools so pegboard gets used alot.

Work I hang them, on pegboard and on nails in the wall, drawer space is limited. Home I have them tossed in a drawer, but once I get some peg board hung most of the will get hung up. Maybe I will build a rack.....

Just thrown in at the moment. Second drawer for some body hammers and dollies. I like that pic with the dowel. Not sure if I have depth to store them that way though.

Here's how I have mine stored in my main box.

Has you can click on the picture and tell, the ball peins are standing in a cut up metal CD rack. The soft faces are in a plastic desktop mail organizer.

I meant to respond a few days ago, but I had a heart attack on May 6, and my normal routine of things have gone kaput.

I've thinking about something like this so I could store my punches under the handles. Problem solved.

I really like that, simple and cheap if gotten from a dollar store, flea market or yard sale etc.

Hope you are feeling better!

Sam, yes, they are cheap. I found them in the families discarded,(junk), items and put them to use.

I am feeling good, going through cardiac rehab and that is going good. I've got back to work, but working around medical appointments. I'm thankful.
Thank you for asking, I appreciate it.

Oh, man, missed the heart comment, Ramblin Man. Glad to hear you're on your feet and back to work. Take it easy and keep up with the therapy. My nephew had a fairly severe heart attack about 5 or 6 years ago and is still going strong. Bending over at the hip and lifting is not your friend avoid it from now on. Not sure how much snow you get in Tennessee but shoveling snow throws cool air into the above and makes for perfect storm for heart attacks. Take it easy and get well.

I've got my hammers on top of a couple of silverware trays from the dollar store. This method leaves me some storage underneath the hammers for replaceable tips, blades, chisels, etc. I could store even more if I reversed every other hammer.

Mine are standing in a "small" deep drawer. Body hammers and dollys to the back.

Another take on the wooden dowel method posted above.

Length of 3/4" pipe, threaded on both ends, with a 3/4" to 1" - 90 degree fitting on each end.
