powdered laundry detergent
the granules grind most of the dirt off; and the detergent cuts the grease
works the best of anything ive tried
we use some fancy orange stuff at work; leaves a nice film so you dont have to scrub a million times, smells good, and doesnt burn your cuts and scrapes. The best feature is its free thanks to work

Lots of good general use stuff listed, use them all. BUT I think there is one that tops the list. The problem is always fine little dark lines left in the cracks of your fingers after washing. I think THE BEST out there is mean green. got hooked on it at a shop I worked at a few years ago. Fantastic.

Dish Soap for light stuff.

GoJo for heavy stuff, plus whatever hand soap happens to be on the kitchen sink... Keeps my hands from drying out...

If I know there's no way to avoid lot's of ground in dirt I use those pastes that you rub into your skin and nails before your work. I think one is called "Invisible Glove". It dries in a minute and makes clean up easier. I try to use nitrile gloves when possible but it's not always practice.

The best stuff I ever used was that white goopy stuff made for laundry stains. I think I've seen it at Autozone, it's marketed as a pre-wash stain remover. The worse stuff I ever used is that orange goopy stuff with pumice... that'll dry and crack your hands to hell.
They sell it much more commonly than the prior mentioned cleaner, I got mine at HF, I'll never buy it again.

You know I also had my uncle tell me, before you go work on your car, put a couple drops of Dawn right on your dry hand and rub it in. Then when you go to wash it'll come right off.

I use Palmolive dish soap for 99% of the nastyness, and a split between Ajax and Gojo for the other 1%. I see no real need to spend too much to simply wash my hands, which get washed again with regular hand soap afterwards anyway.

Of all of the kinds of hand cleaner i've tried, I like permatex fast orange and both zep green and cherry bomb (seem to be the same except for color and smell). The snapon stuff seems like it would be the best for occasional use when you're hands are literally black as coal.

My nephew has worked for gojo for 30 years. They have treated him absolutely great. Great product, great company.

another vote for cherry bomb, have it at work, love the smell and does a really good job getting rid of tough grease.

I worked at a metal fab shop that used D.W. Davies "tuffie" hand cleaner, that also works really well.

At school we have gojo in the automotive department and thats as useless as using plain water... no grit to do anything.

We have snap-on's nitrogold in the diesel department and its too gritty and dry, you need to keep your hands wet for it to work.

edit: I use dawn at home, thats what my grandfather used...

I get this at my local hf. It works great and does not leave that slimey feeling on your hands that you have to wash off with a bar of soap like a lot of them do. I have not seen it anywhere but hf but you may be able to get it elsewhere.

I use Gojo, mostly because I don't have a water source in my garage and have to wipe it off. I usually have to wash my hands when I get to the house to get off the rest of the slime. I don't like pumice in my handcleaner because of this.

I tried a Castrol product once that was a waterless handcleaner. After you put it on you rub your hands together and it dries up and flakes off. Worked OK, except that if you have any hair on your hands it stuck to it like gum.

GoJo with pumice, and not the lemon ****, the regular petroleum based stuff. On the truck I keep regular smooth GoJo because it will wipe clean with a rag and no pumice after taste.

Haha! This is the exact stuff I'm bashing. I got it at HF too.
I guess it varies person to person, I don't have sensitive skin but I guess it does work for some. I really like the dawn in a spray bottle idea.
