Hand File Storage Made Easy

Picked up a vintage Proto "winged lady" top chest at an estate sale [$40 w/tools] and decided to re-organize some of the metal working tools. An 8" stacked dado run up about 3/4 the height of a 26" length poplar board, used to cut channels for which hand files rest, without touching, on their side.

Thought some here might find this as handy as I did, never having been a member of the "toss my hand files into an old Folgers can" kind of guy.

Yes, you are correct.. it is worthless without pictures. I'm working on it. It didn't like my links from my google drive.

I made this out of hardboard cut from an old clipboard, a 1/4" threaded rod, and 1/4" PEX pipe. Instructions in my sig.

I have a file storage problem. Or maybe it is a file obsession?
I can't seem to pass up good quality files at auctions and sales.

Can we get a pic of the entire box setup? I'm curious as to what box you have.

:needpics:

They aren't working.

It's easier to complain than try to fix the problem, isn't it? ;)

I'd do my best to help if he'd asked. I was just pointing out that often (when people use email urls, etc) they can see the pics but the rest of us can't.

I've posted these 1st two before. The second one is a make do set up I should change eventually.

I added this set up at the other end of the shop using coarse foam salvaged from an old shipping crate I scrapped.

I used to use a wrench roll for my files at home....bucket boss type canvass but it's so large I stopped. I like the ideas above, but have to say they all look like they take up so much space in the box...

I don't have that many files but I made my own rack which is mounted on the end of my workbench next to the vice. It's basically two strips of wood probably 1" x 1/2" with a small block of the same material each end and in the middle so it leaves a gap for the file blades to drop through and they then rest on the handle. It's spaced off the bench with another block each end. Cost me nothing as it was scraps leftover from another job. For thicker round files I drilled it out a little.
