Hi Guys,

I am in the process of planning out replacing the handrails in my house as they are dated and do not fit the rest of the house. I would like to also refinish a window I have and put a screen on it.

As you can see from the pictures I have a odd situation of the hand rail running into the window. I want to put a screen on the window as shown in the second picture.

I apologize for the bad lighting, that's on the list after the stairs/railings.

Any suggestions on how to rerun the hand rail to do this ?

Can the end of the railing be trimmed to fit along the wall at the end ? Basically run trim from the floor up the wall to the window trim.

Another option would be to replace the railing completely with a short wall. . .stud wall with drywall.

Railing is probably not up to code and could be dangerous for small children. One option is a short wall just under the window and extending 4-5". Then the rail could be angle cut and terminated into the wall.

The sill of the window angles down. Can you fill in the bottom to create a flat sill? Then the railing terminates at the new filled in wall.

If you fill in the gap from the last spindle to the intersection of the those two walls, that will probably allow you trim the handrail back to allow for the window screen. It will have to be a robust connection. There is a requirement on how much a handrail needs to resist a lateral load on the building code.

Another option is to install a new end post at this end. Again, it needs to be strong enough to cantilever from the floor and/or be braced by the wall.

That's just a horrible detail.

Not really looking to put in a short wall, would like to keep the railing/spindles. just different railings/spindles

Im pondering over filing in the sill to be level and terminating the railing into that. Only issue I see is matching the plaster after.

Next time the wife is away i might try and loosen up the sill to see how it is under neath and see what i can do.
