Hi,

My mom is a big gardener, and for Christmas, I want to make her a garden hoe - she's having trouble finding the style she wants.

I thought it would be nice to make her one, but I can't think of how I'd affix the head I make (example below) to a steel or aluminum handle... I'd prefer to use a light, strong metal so I'll source that if I can't find a good quality one online.

I can weld and cut steel, but not aluminum - so if I get an aluminum handle I'll need to figure out some way to attach it to the steel head

I appreciate any help.

It’s a hoe not a shovel where you would be prying with it. I see you are in Wisconsin and probably have access to winter skating and hockey sticks. Maybe one of your own. Cut off the blade and use that as a handle.

Ash handle.

Metal handle tools may last but rough on the user.
I agree with everyone above. Hickory, ash, white oak, hard maple, or even popular. A wood handle feels better to use. Absorbs the shock. Make or buy a wood handle. Fit it to the taper & use a handle rivet to keep it in place. Sand it & rub in some boiled lindseed oil. Steel, aluminum, & even fibreglass handles are not friendly tools.

Aluminum is cold and lacks character. A good quality wood handle is hardly heavier and looks so much nicer, is comfortable, warm. Your mom deserves better than a piece of tube

The big box's and every mom and pop hardware store will have a selection of handles, wood and fiberglass, very few/none in steel and or aluminum, available with or without that steel taper attachment piece. Wood allows you to buy that lazar engraver you want! Ok you could outsource the personalized message that will BLAST that thoughtful gift into ORBIT, even a soldering iron/woodburning kit will allow personalization that wouldn't stand out on steel/aluminum/fibrglass, like it would on a light coloured wood. Way to go for mom! Now for attachment weld the tang to the sheave [tapered sleeve attachment point], drill an undersized hole into the handle, put some small/mediun notches into the tang put some 5 minute epoxy into the hole and drive in. When dry cross drill for and install the supplied nail/rivet. Harry
Edit: taking a closer look at your picture just buy a commercially available cut off the head and attach your own, I did this at a place I used to work, to create a custom handle, [to reach up and trip the chip bin handle from the ground, some one slipped while climbing up from the lift truck tire, at night and nearly fell, so health and safety intervened and I had a new project!]
