I know metal files have been around for centuries, but I never understood how they could have been handmade by blacksmiths in ages past ... at least until I saw this video.

Making files by hand.

I now have a greater appreciation for the growing file drawer in my tool chest! Hope you enjoy.

Incredible work but it must take someone special to hammer the points on a file all day.
I read once more people were employed in file making in Sheffield than all the other tool making activities combined.

They were, and they were dying in their 30's because of the lead exposure.

Oh, and for clarity, these are rasps, not files we're talking about. I am not aware of any modern hand manufacture of files, or a need for handmade files. Handmade rasps however are superior to machine made rasps, as the irregularity of the cutting points in a handmade rasp is desirable.
