Can you use a handy box with cover as a pass thru/protection for nm cable? My top plate is even with the rafters of my enclosed porch, so i was wondering if i can mount a box to the wall and pass the wire thru then up along the rafter. Hope this makes sense, thanks in advance.

I suspect you could do as you are suggesting as long as proper clamps are used at entry and exit. But Why?

If your conditions and environment are such that NM is allowed, than why the box?

If you do decide to use a box, at least loop some NM in there in case you ever want to access it as a circuit.

I am of the opinion that there is never a good place to use a handy box.

Kind of hard to see, but there is a hole at the base of the red ridge board. That is also the bottom of the double top plate. This is my dilemma, the bottom of the ridge board and the bottom of the top plate are lined up. so i cant come out through the ridge board without drilling into the side of the top plate. Thats why i thought of coming in the back of a box, and they up through the top.

If that is truly a ridge board you can cut much of it out of your way. A ridge board serves to keep the rafters from twisting. Cutting out a few inches at the plates will grant you acces to the drilled hole in the plates & the rafter bay. That is if I have read you posts correctly.

Can you get a picture from farther back,if I'm thinking right you can drill up from the bottom a few inches, then drill sideways lined up with the other hole, then pull wire through. One hole in the plate won't matter, your just trying to have the wire protected from damage

i guess i was over thinking it, i dont see why i couldnt drill the ridge beam into the side of the top plate line them up like you said. i might be able to just clip the bottom of the top plate, only need 1/2 in hole.

I'm with redwolf, the less junction boxes in a circuit the better. If your able to I would go from the fan right the the switch box. Best of luck.
