Sorting through some projects on my mom's 1956 house. This screen door is pretty heavy. The 2-1/2" hinges I picked up fit the hinges side mortise but don't align with the original door screw holes. Install as is or do I need a different type of hinge?

Should the door side hinge be mortised also? I can't believe I can't find the original hinges in this house somewhere. I mean come on now, I did find this!

Looks like the door used to have spring return hinge which face mount. To be proper both door and jamb should be mortised. The leaves of the hinge you have would be folded together and you would mortise the edge of your door. Can be done with a sharp chisel pretty quickly.

Getting the door to match the jamb however is the hard part. I have started making a template out of thin hardboard or plywood that I layout both door and jamb from. Still usually need a little bit of fitting after.

Looking at this diagram my door setup is a half mortise. If I used a wider hinge, the door would be pushed out further? This kit doesn't have any dimensions!

Looks like cmandp has the correct type of hinge identified. The give away is how far the screws are inset from the side. It looks like your original ones were squared off on the face. I searched briefly without finding any that matched that style. A more exhaustive effort may yield a match.

Something like this. National hardware Menards brand. So I need a half mortise 2-1/2" spring loaded hinge. Second picture is the closest one so far, non spring loaded, will need to open the hinge side to 3" and their $60 a pair. I'm in the rabbit hole now.

this one.

if you mortise the door and jamb for the hinge the only thing you need to worry about is having the holes fit the door thickness. The actual hinge part can stick out further into the air if needed. Think I'd try 3 or 4 smaller hinges rather then a heavy duty one. Might need to run a saw on it to take off some wood on the side if too tight.

Brass hinges arrived Friday, screen door will get media blasted. I should look for a used truck while I'm here as it limits my hauling of stuff.
