This is how we install Lista benches and cabinets ....
Typically a workbench for heavy work is about 35-1/2" tall. A stand up bench for lighter work is about 41". You are mid-way between on relatively standard bench heights. One important thing to note, you are talking about a workbench not a kitchen. While similar in nature, the work performed is vastly different.
We like to have 18" between bench top and the bottom of our 29" high overhead cabinets. Any less and the overhead cabinets encroach on the workspace.
We also take into consideration the type of work situation and the users physical characteristic. Are you going to working sitting down or standing up or a combination of the two? How tall is the primary user of the bench/overheads?
The overhead cabinets then need to be positioned with as much bench-to-cabinet free space that your body and work position will allow you to comfortably reach. Get some blue masking tape and tape out the critical parameters on your bench/wall area. Test the reach and also the workspace accessibility.
This particular setup is based upon a 37-1/2" bench top height. The overheads are positioned 18" above the work top. Larry, who is a little taller than the owner, is 6'-1". In this installation we used a 2" frame base to add a little to the height. This bench is for light car detailing and maintenance and will be used standing up.
Good luck on your project.
