Hello all,

I am getting ready to start hanging lights (8', 2@4') in my metal building and not all of the purlins line up to hang them from.

Trying to get some ideas, besides using 2x material.

I have seen some posts that run the metal box material, that seems a little pricey.

Cheers!

Post a pic of your building and show us what you're trying to do.

I've wired several steel buildings and haven't had a problem, in fact we're working on lighting for a 2200' long steel building today. I'm sure we can come up with something but it makes it much simpler with pics.

EDIT: Not sure why it keeps underlining "lighting"....?

The quick and easy way they use in commercial work is Unistrut. I am not sure if that is the "metal box material" you were talking about.

I couldn't find any pictures to show exactly what I mean but here are two that show the different parts. In this pic ignore the white post hanging down, it just shows the way it mounts:

This second picture shows how you just use threaded rod and an end attachment to connect to another piece of strut, or in your case, a light.

You can move the various attachment points and pieces in all directions to straighten out and level your rows of lights.

Unistrut was what I was talking about. Here is a photo that I need to go between the purlins.

I think that you could use that light gauge perforated angle sold at big box stores perpendicular across purlins to mount the ends of your lights to. Use self drilling screws to fasten. Lights are lite weight and that light gauge angle has to be much cheaper than uni-strut.

We would most likely mount the fixtures with the Z channel rather than perpendicular to them. I can't remember ever going perpendicular honestly.

If perpendicular was needed, we'd try and cross two Z's with the fixture. If that wasn't possible, I'd try butting another 8' or 4' fixture off the end of the first one to get enough length to reach the next Z.

Or hang them from jack chain and V hooks.

Last but not least, I'd hang them from strut, etc.

Go with the purlins instead.

Then, put some single tubes on those sidewall girts.

Light from the side, especially in a tall building makes it a lot easier to see.

Thanks any photos of mounting with the Z channel?

Thanks all you have given me some great ideas.

I should be able to use an eye bolt on the purlins and join them with jack chain. Its only the center and one on the front and back that fall in between the purlins.

Cheers!
