Hanging gas line trimmer

I recently bought a gas line trimmer and it's taking up alot of space.

I would like to hang it out of the way. I have 4-foot chrome wire shelves and I think I can sandwich some plywood in to add hooks to it, so I can store it horizontally hooking on the shaft. The hooks need to be big enough to clear the engine though.

I need it off the floor. Seems to me horizontally is the best way to store it also. (using every week or 2)

Anyone have pictures.

I have found storing it vertically from a double-pronged bracket or hook is probably the best idea. My reasoning is that you want the gas tank to be upright with the fuel not being in contact with the cap.... it is just less likely to ever leak that way.

Besides - when you go to a store that sells string trimmers (like Sears) they are always stored in a vertical manner, and I figure when it comes to efficient use of space, those stores probably have a good idea of what works and what doesn't.

But in the stores they dont have oil or gas in them...

I hang mine from the ceiling on hooks works just fine and its out of the way

If it's a 2 cycle, hanging them is fine. Stores do it, dealers do it, repair centers do it, even the manufacturers do it with test units.

4 stroke ones aren't so happy with hanging. If in the right position for long enough the oil will creep past the rings and into the cylinder. I've actually grabbed units that were stored for a while hanging or laying on their side/upside down and have had them been hydrolocked with oil. Nothing like ripping your shoulder out trying to pull over a stupid string trimmer.

Would that include hanging a 4 stroke one with the engine towards the top? I store mine that way and haven't had a problem... but don't want a problem either.

If you haven't had a problem it's probably fine. The units I'm familiar with have more of the crankcase volume towards the snout on the powerhead, so if sitting engine-up the oil sits in there, and doesn't fill up around the piston skirt.

gladiator, craftsman, closetmaid, rubbermaid, etc all sell string trimmer hangers. it's basically two hooks that are curved to accept the engine/shaft portion. a great space saver. i personally use a similar hook made for shovels, brooms, etc and stick my trimmer on the end.

something companies need to make a hanger for is the back pack blower.

In order to save wall space, I hang mine vertically from 3/4" dowel pegs.

This allows it to hang with the rest of the garden tools. All my tools hang in a space only about 4' wide. If I would go horizontal, it would take up too much wall space. I did have a second machine hanging on the dowels to the right.

yup. Been hanging mine from the guard over the rafters for years, Never a problem.

Me too. Rafters or garage door track. Just make sure if you use the garage door track that you put it past where the door stops in the up position.

I hook the guard over the truss hanger in the carport.since they are both 2 strokes and I only use them a few times a year,I dump the gas and run them dry each time I use them.
