Hanging Heater Installation

Hey Folks,

If you got one of those hanging heaters installed, and didn't install it yourself, who did? I called two HVAC companies, one which I worked with before, one which I got bids from before for a different project, and both said they only install these in commercial spaces. They won't do residential installs, and didn't know of anyone local who did. My trusses are 24' high at the bottom, and I don't have the time, skills, or comfort with heights, to get this work done.

I know, from when I was trying to find a heat source for the garage at my old property, that waste oil heaters can only be sold/installed by home owners in my state: it's illegal for a company to install them into my garage. I'm starting to wonder if maybe that's true of ALL hanging gas heaters, and not just waste oil (I'm in Washington).

I'm starting to think that just a freestanding propane fireplace, even if more expensive, might be the more feasible option due to installation hassle.

Around here, if it's propane/natural gas, you call a plumber.

If you want it done turn key, might ask around at local bars/restaurants - I often see "outdoor" heating units done in those "commercial applications".

As a residential installer if a customer had a garage that the bottom of the trusses was 24' we would refer them to a commercial company, job like that will need a manlift. This is the type of residential job that a commercial company is probably best suited for but may take some explaining to get them to understand that it is not a basic residential garage.

I'm sure those heaters are legal in Washington; my builder installed one in my garage in 2018 (Snohomish county). 13 ft ceiling. Mine is propane.

Good luck with your search. As mentioned, someone will need to be able to bring a manlift into your space to get this done. But commercial HVAC contractors should have no issue with that.

I installed one in a greenhouse, but it sure wasn't 24' off the floor. It was one the "Hot Dog" models your link shows. They are pretty much plug and play, power, gas and a control.
