Hanging License Plates

What hardware do you guys use to hang license plates on your walls?

I'm debating between small trim nails to just hang them on (which would make them movable) or using a screw to secure them. Not sure which to go with...

Pictures are a plus!

Trim nails might work if you have plastic bumpers...

i dont have a pic handy but i like to hang up the top tag and than use a bunch of "S" hooks to attach lower ones. makes 'em look nice & even.

I used those lil plastic screw inserts for sheet rock and planned out for the main 48 states on a wall and went to town drilling/screwing... then later rearranged my shop and had to take them all down

i just remembered. no pix of tags, but i hung up some finned valve covers the same way. not the best pic(cause i was taking a pic of the tanks)but you get the idea.

That's a good idea!

I haven't put any up because I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do with the garage yet. It was an addition, so the house wall has old wood siding on it. If I put them up there, it will be easy to make them level.

The rest of the walls are unfinished studs...I have yet to find an easy way to hang them on those!

I have over 400 plates hung in my garage and they are all hung with drywall screws

I use the cheap little picture hangars...the bit of metal bent into a hook, with the nail to fasten it to the wall. Easy to place, easy to move, doesn't do much damage to the wall. They look like nails here, on an old motorcycle plate I have hanging on the wal, but I found the really big picture hooks...

I use thumb tacks to hold them. Mine are in paneling, so it holds really good.

I hang mine with the chain links for hanging lights. (very cheap) I just squeeze the link open enough to hook in the license plate holes and they hang nicely against the wall in a straight line. You only have to attach the top plate that way.

That is what I do. ^^^^
I only collect vintage plates from 1932 & collect in pairs- and they have to be in excellent condition. I stack the pair & mount them. I have many sets from about 20 states. Quite the investment- many go for hundreds each. I have 1 pair of '32 Arizona plates that are wrinkled & suffer corner damage. Those are copper & pricey! I check Ebay occasionally for an upgrade set but they go for stupid money in pristine condition.

I use this white plastic edge banding that is normally used to cover the edges of plastic wall panels like in public restrooms. I get it at HD in the moulding and trim aisle for like $2 for an 8' piece. Cut to size, staple to the wall then slide the plates in the "track"

I like this approach because I don't have to use a million tacks or screws and it holds the plates snug so they don't rattle around on a windy day with the door open...

I collect more modern plates which tend to be flatter embossing, but the vintage ones that have a slightly higher raised edge still fit in the channel as it's pliable.

Screw magnets to the wall, then let the magnets hold the license plates in place. Great if you don't want to see the fasteners.

That is not a bad idea except if you want to clean them they are all tied together.

If this helps. This is what I used. Wanted them secured to the wall to make sure they would not get knocked off. Used them to cover my wall in the garage bathroom.

Somewhere here on GJ is nice big garage where guy had so many plates that he used them as dividing line between lower dark paint and upper lighter paint of garage. He had cool trim boards to make it all look custom. Thus, the plates were "top finish" of wainscoating on bottom.

I've got 12-foot walls. The top 8 feet is white pegboard, the bottom 4 feet is corrugated metal siding, there's a chair rail between them.
I used drywall screws to mount vintage plates to the chair rail.
They're all level and even this way.

X2, If you use the kind you can actually grab with your fingers (not the type that push in almost flush) you can switch the plates around easy. Just don't use the leaf blower on them too directly!

I use my antique license plates to cover a wire chase in my garage.

The license plates make a cool border around the interior of the garage and also serve a real purpose in hiding my electrical and data wiring. I spaced two lines of 2"x2" wood 5" apart around the perimeter of my garage and screwed the license plates into the wood with 1/2" black tek screws.

I use the TEKs #8 3/4" inch lathe screws + a nylon washer.

6 bucks for 200 at HD or other hardware store.
