Hanging Speakers

Have any of you hung stereo speakers from your walls by using french cleats? I've never used cleats for anything, but have read about them on here.

I want speakers on the front and back walls of my garage, and I want them off of my bench. As it is now, the laptop/stereo and two speakers take up most of one of my benches. I don't have the space to allow that to happen.

I made a small shelf for each and velcro'd the speaker to the shelf. I don't like putting mounting screws in speaker cabinets even though I make my own speakers...

What will you be mounting to?? Brick/block/drywall/OSB/......?

but my speakers are some old Bose models, and are mounted pretty high up in a 14ft eave height.

Good question, Mark! I will be hanging them in OSB.

The speakers probably are not meant to hang on the wall, in that they are sort of heavy and not little wall-specific units.

There are 3/4 boards running horizontally behind the OSB which I can use to screw into.

How heavy of a speaker do you think can safely be hung?

Check the back of those speakers before you hang them directly against the wall. Lots of them have a port out the back and are supposed to sit several inches or even a foot from the wall to sound right. you might be better off hanging them from the ceiling with cable or chain.

Build this mantle to hold my center channel speaker and it is using a french cleat design. That speaker is about 65 lbs. and the mantle is about 60lbs if I remember right.

I plan on doing a shelf in the corner up high with the speaker sitting on the shelf, with a lip edge on the shelf. I like the idea of using velcro to hold the speaker in place.

The 6-8" version of those brackets above should hold just about any speaker, particularly if it in a corner. Make a shelf if you don't want to put screws into the bottom of the speaker....

If they're heavy, I'd support them from the bottom. Mine (12x8x6 or so) were light enough I put the brackets on the top so you really wouldn'g see them. I'm going back down to the shop in a minute....I snap a pic and post it.

Sorry I don't have a picture. When I repainted the other side of the garage and moved the upright freezer into the house garage, I lost the place for my stereo to sit. I put up a shelf for it but that left the speakers. Since it was nothing more than a bookshelf stereo, it's not huge.

I mere cut a couple pieces of OSB or plywood the width of the speaker and screwed them to the back of the speaker. I left a couple of inches of the OSB sticking up over the top of the speaker. The part sticking up gave me a place to screw the speakers to the wall.

On the garage side, the two speakers sit on corner shelves.
