I have seen some great storage ideas that involve building shelving hanging from the ceiling. How are you guys attaching it? I am assuming into the joists? Any tips on attaching stuff to the joists, cause I made my wife a "ladder" to hang from the ceiling in the laundry room for her to put stuff on hangers and hang up, but my stud finder definetly could not find the center the of joists.

I'm working on a plan now. I lag bolted a 2x4 horizontally across my ceiling with 5" lag bolts and am attaching my shelving to that.

First one was a trial run, I'm making 3 more tomorrow to hang.

It turned out well, and very sturdy.
.
  • 3x 2x4x8's $9
  • 1 4x8 OSB cut down to 32" $12
  • 1 4x8 hardboard cut down to 32" and then 4" slivers made for the siding (will be painting it) $9
  • Slotted angle iron, about 44" or so for each shelf roughly $13
  • A few lag bolts and lots of screws $10
  • 4 2x4x10's to run above and on the side $6/shelf
  • Two joist hangers $1.50

Expensive for shelves but I can hang on to them from below, they aren't going anywhere

I'm also working on a plan- some slotted angle iron, some 2x4s, chain... I need to store some wheels and tires

Chain would make it easier but not as stout (would sway from side to side), I thought about it but went against it in favor of the slotted angle iron. Would be a lot easier to make though, and probably cheaper, and just as strong.
