You will need to reinforce the ceiling no matter what. Getting it thru the ceiling may take some doing and may impact fire code (chimney effect)

It need some kind of bolt and chain. I would go to home depot and ask the guy in the hardware department.

Best bet is to use a bag mount and short chain and disconect it after us and put the bag in the corner. If your heavy bad is on a long chain or rope it will swing too much when you hit it and create an unrealistic striking scenario. Otherwise buy a good quality bag stand and push it into the corner when not in use. Warning: hanging a bag from the rafters will shake the hell out of your house/garage! My Dad yelled at me constantly about this when I was growing up :)

Short or long hanging chain depends on what you are doing. I had one from an 10' ceiling that I loved to swing to do kicks into it as it came at me. If you don't have that room, put up a detach link and just take it down when not in use.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
I have a 150 pound Super leather heavy bag and had to build a bracket to mount it to double 2 x 12" I put across two reinforced joints in my workout room. Remember there is a lot of force transmitted when you strike a bag and it starts moving around. I've broken a few ceiling joists with 80 and 100 pound bags and didn't want to chance it with the 150 pound. My opinion is over-engineer it and you won't regret it.

I am building a rail system for my 80# bag using overhead track rail and a trolly I've made to move it from the side of my garage to the center. I got the origional idea from USMC Bay who built one from Unistrut.

I was looking at an ad from the local steel yard and noticed the overhead track rail was on sale and saw that you could buy the bearing/wheelsets for $3 each and decided to start with that. I cut a trolly from 1/4 cold rolled and am using some DOM scrap for the axles. The wheels are roller bearings that ride in the channels of the rail. I'll bolt it to the wall on one side and the joists on the other when I finish it. I am also going to build into it a lock system like a garage door opener uses to secure the door to the carrier so when it roll it out it will snap into position. When I am done, I'll pull a rope that releases it to slide back against the wall. I'll try to get some pictures of what I have.
