i threw my hansen socket holders in the trash. i thought i was going be cool and do what everybody here was talking about so I went and bought some hansens. but after about the ten time of knocking them off the bench and sockets going all over the floor. Im gong back to the old way, the metal holder with the clips.

hansen are not for me, I.m not keep going back to the box for one socket at a time. they was a total waste of my money. not everything new is actually good

Don't feel bad, I don't have Hansens either. I think they are more for the person that leaves the holder in the box and grabs one sockets at a time.

I love them, I am the guy who grabs one socket at a time. It was a PIA filling all the empty pegs but now that I have I wouldnt go back.

I like the racks for most of my sockets, and one set of the most used in/on hansens in my service cart. Works for me.

I used to hate the metal clips cause i was never good at grabbing the right size socket by just looks but now that i have been doing it longer i can do it no problems. That being said i still think its faster for when i have to grab a socket that i dont grab often. Just a quick scan amd i know i have the right one.

blond, brunett, red head, not everybody likes the same thing ! i belive he this a point, just because a guy with a tool box that looks new(and the tools look as though they are not used) has somthing thats not the only way to go. my tools slide across the concrete, drop, etc.. so they get used and sometime abused in the name of "get the job done!" and just because the new tool (holder, in this case) is out might not work. ask around and find out before i go waste $$ on somthing that might not help !!!! thanks "brownbagg" !!!

Have you tried the craftsman locking socket holders? Much nicer, then the metal clip style, and if it does hit the floor, your not chasing sockets all over the place....

We were at Menards today and I was looking at the Hansens. Of course I was adding the price up in my head as to how much it would be......:scared:

With the three sizes of S.A.E. sockets, then the three sizes of Metric sockets, (1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drives) then two holders of each to take care of all the sockets...I was looking at a couple of hundred for plastic holders that are no doubt made out of recycled plastic. Nice, but I can't see it right now. Maybe Santa Kringle will be nice to me this year.

I bought mine from Sears and it was about 70 for two of each. but I spent another 100 on sockets just to fill empty spots.

I find the rails that Wright tools uses are the best. Plastic rail and clip with detents. You can also get them at McMaster Carr.

I'm not a Hansen tray guy.

^eBay. I just bought a dozen 1/8 6 point snap-on shallows on ebay, the extra 11 will be for sale once they get here. Some of the sizes can be had at Sears, but most are eBay for me. I love the hansens, easy to organize and inventory, and if you stick 2 strips of magnet tape to the bottom they don't slide around. My problem is between 1 full set for 6 points, and 1 full set of 12 points, it takes up a whole drawer!

my biggest gripe with hansens is that they do take up a lot of room.
i picked mine up on sale at sears a few years ago

mine stay in the drawer all the time, and i dont use them in my service truck box, space is at a premium already
i can only fit 3/8" & 1/2'dr sockets in the top of the box.

1/4" & 3/4" dr sockets are stashed in another compartment in the truck

Why would you throw away something that plenty of people here would pay for?

I love my Hansen sets, and wouldn't want any other setup. Has nothing to do with being cool, though.

For me the Hansens are perfect for my tool box. These are the sockets that don't go anywhere though. If I need something in the field or as a travel set they are already in kit form. It works for me and I don't expect anyone else to work out of my tool set either. I would have taken them off your hands also Brownbagg. Guess it is "stupid" in the eye of the beholder. Good luck with your prefered organization method.

The Harbor Freight Hansen style socket trays are $8 for a set of three.
I actually like them better because the sockets are stored hex side up.

I've heard a few people say this. Can you tell me why it matters whether the sockets are stored drive-side down or drive-side up? I really don't think I'd care either way.

if they are hex side up and you have a bolt you are unsure of the size, you can test fit in the socket until you find the right one.

It is just my personal preference... I am a very visual person.
Maybe partly because the sockets in my mobile box are stored
on traditional rails and I am accustomed to seeing the hex.
It also makes it easy to distinguish 6 point from 12 point.

i didnt know hansons would make me cool,,i use em, i like em, and now i find it makes me cool too...thats great,,all this time i thought it was just me........I generally know my sizes so i grab a couple to make sure one will fit so i dont have that trip problem too often, and i keep em in the box so i never had em fall off a bench, got magnets mounted on my lift to put them on when not in the box in the tray...................................................... your right about all new things arent good just cause they're new. that is so true,,like new style gas cans,,i hate those new ones. hansons may not be for you so use what works best for you. but why didnt you give em to somebody..if you hate em so bad at least give em to somebody you dont like. or maybe a nephew or brother. if i dint like em i woulda busted em all to hell the tenth time they fell over before i trashed em... oh well , hope you find somethin that works for ya.

I have Hansens and like them (except for the part about feeling the need to fill the empty pegs). I'd actually prefer the open end of the socket up though, because I'm a visual person and can grab the correct socket by size just by what it looks like (as opposed to knowing what size it is, if you follow me....)

I just picked up the Hansen knockoffs from Tractor Supply last week ($5 for 1/2" & 3/8" SAE set). I like them enough to buy a second set to try and convert to Metric (why don;t they sell a metric set?). Has anyone had any luck in relabeling the posts?

I bought a set of Hansen (OK, Matco's version) and I used them for a while, but I ended up going back to regular socket rails. The Hansen racks took up too much room in my portable box (this is where I had them) and I just pulled them out. (I didn't throw them out though) I guess it's a matter of personal preference, I just don't prefer them.

I'm not a Hansen user, I've experienced them using the shops tool set at work, didn't do it for me. I'm still on Craftsman rails at home and work. At my last shop one of the guys had Leslie magnetic trays, I think I would like those, just hard to make the investment when what I have works.

I like my Hansens. They stay in the tool box and I know when something is missing.

I really like these Matco socket rails. They're much easier to use than the metal ones.

+1, although I use the cheap HF knock-offs (3 rails for $3.50).

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the Hansens! They would just take up too much room in my socket drawer.

I bought all three metric sizes on eBay last year for about $32 shipped, it was a great deal. For me, I can't stand the rails since it takes me too long to recognize the size markings.

For me, the $0.99 HF rails work fine. I cut 3/8" plywood to fit the top of my Craftsman chest and then cut the rails to size. Metric on one side, SAE on the other, adapters, etc. down the middle. Mix/Match drive sizes if/as needed. Easy layout, easy access, under $10 for the whole deal.

Never thought about rails of any form. My sockets still live in their original boxes - metal box for impact sockets near where impact tools are stored & remainder in their plastic box that gets pulled out to the bench to work anyways.

However, I can never judge the size of a bolt head so those rails with sockets stored appropriately kind of give me a fighting chance :)

I just realised my problem is not lack of rails, but rather lack of sockets requiring rails. I'll start there......thanks for pictures so I can plan ahead. I would imagine personal taste has a lot to do with it...just like the size, and configuration of our tool storage.
