I have a question about some of Hanson's dies. Hanson's die offering can be seen here: http://www.irwin.com/tools/browse/taps-dies-sets/dies

They have several different product lines with the following descriptions:
1) Hexagon Dies - Best suited for maintenance and repair work
2) Round Dies - Solid round dies ideal for general purpose threading
3) Adjustable Round Dies - Adjustable dies ideal for precision threading
4) Re-threading Dies - Designed for repairing damabed bolts and studs

How are the Hex dies (1) and Round Dies (2) different from each other? Can you cut new threads with the hex dies (1)? The descriptions make it seem like the hex dies (1) and re-threading dies (4) serve the same purpose. I'm good with the purpose of both round die lines but the hex ones confuse me. I was under the impression that the hex dies (1) were the same as the round dies (2) but able to be used with a wrench. I hope someone can shed some light on this because I just ordered a lot of the hex dies from Harry Epstein's to use for occasional threading.

Thanks,
David

Wow, I wish you'd have named this thread differently. You had my hopes up. I thought it was that pop group from the late 90's!

Back to the REAL purpose of this thread...

I would invest in the adjustable dies if you plan on using them for various purposes. The only difference I have ever noticed in the Hex and Round, is as you said the ability to use a wrench or socket in tight areas.
