hey guys, I was at harbor freight today looking to buy some deep impact sockets, Ive seen alot of people around here that really like them, I noticed there are 2 different types at the store, one it's made in China with laser etched markings that say Pittsburg pro, and the others are Taiwanese with the makings pressed into the metal that say Pittsburg cr-v, which ones are the good ones that people seem to really like around here?, both were the same price. thanks.

I have the $24.99 ones that are CR-MO these:

I've been using the CR-MO set at work for a year, both standard and metric. On the plus side, they are bomb-proof. I haven't even scratched one yet. They also fit well.

On the down side, the size is stamped so thin and lightly, that I can barely read it. It makes for some fumbling around to find the right size. Also, they're pretty thick, so sometimes clearances are an issue.

Mostly though I feel like a real schmo pulling out something that says "Pittsburg" on it.

Throw out the china versus Taiwan debate for a second, the main difference between the two is that one is moly and the other is vanadium. I prefer my impacts are made of moly, generally thicker in appearance and softer, but will hold up to hammering and less prone to breakage. The vanadium impacts are generally shinier, and thinner walled, which I suspect comes in handy in certain applications.

You can paint the stamp, and wipe off the excess paint..yellow shows up well on impact sockets.

You can take some white out and paint over the numbers and then take a cloth and lightly wipe over it removing the white out that is on top and leaving it in the grooves. It makes them much easier to read and it holds up well.

COO not withstanding I have broken some of the older impact sockets but the newer style ( pittsburge pro ) have yet to fail.

The metric deepwell embossed size set has been fault-free for 5 years or so for me. Don't remember COO, but it's the set that came in the steel box; 10-32mm.

That's what I figured, the Taiwanese look like the better quality, I just got thrown off by the Pittsburg "pro" on the Chinese, and I also didn't like that the sizes would not be easy to see, but I hadn't thought about the paint or white out suggestions, great ideas.

Re: Pro, the employee that handled an exchange for me recently did a "Oh, no receipt needed for Pittsburgh" thing. :dunno:

I've got some in 3/8 drive. Pittsburgh Pro, stamped not etched. Pretty sure they are Taiwanese. I use them damn near everyday. I've even tossed them on 1/2" drive with adapter. So far, so good. I'd call a set in any drive size from HF a pretty good deal.
