Harbor Freight 1 ton Engine Crane

One thing I left behind when I moved to TN from NH was my crusty old engine crane (cherry picker style) because the cylinder leaked down & it was nearly 20 years old. So I had pretty much decided to just get a new one once my garage is built. Well here's the short version of why I bought one today... I was in the local Harbor Freight store last week looking at other stuff & saw them for $200. Not bad I think to myself. So then I'm back in there a couple days ago & they are having an in store sale on them at $179. Even better but I can wait. Then I get the flyer in the mail and there's a coupon for the same crane for $149 starting next week. Now we're talking. I "might" have to pull the trigger even though my garage isn't even built yet. Yesterday I'm in a Barnes & Noble & I buy the latest Hemmings Motor News like I do most months and when I get home there's a Harbor Freight page with more coupons & the same crane is listed for $99... Well hell. That did it. As of an hour ago I have one sitting in my shed. Why they have 3 different sale prices for the same crane is beyond me but I ain't complaining. $100 off coupons are damn hard to ignore.

I had one but ended up selling it; the boom was too short to reach fully into my 71 Cutlass; needed a 2 -ton so I rented it. If it will fit what you want to pull, it will work fine; I had no complaints on the quality and I certainly liked the way it folded up compactly in my garage.

Thanks ! As soon as my garage gets built I'll be looking for some other stuff. I don't normally buy tools at discount places but things like this that don't get used everyday are hard to beat and there are Harbor Freight and Northern Tool stores within a 20 minute drive from here.

Yea I understand. And some of here newer hard tools I've had decent luck with too.

I am not sure about all the models but they have a 2 ton that is really good,,, its about as good as it gets and certainly tops in its price range.

For 100 bucks if I can use it to stand up the legs on my lift when my garage gets done I'll be happy. I'm retired & just playing with hotrods these days. If I was looking for one to use regularly I'd probably have gone with the 2 ton. This one may get used twice a year if that but to me it's one of those things that are a "must have" in any well equipped shop and with the folding legs it dosn't take up much space.

I was in HF this week and the shop cranes are now a dark gray, tool box (metal flake?) type paint. No idea on if the mechanism has changed, but they look nice.

Keep in mind the rated 1 or 2 ton is with the crane arm in the shortest position, with the longest "spot with the pin in" is 1/4 that. OTOH I've seen motors lifted with the arm farther out than it should be.
