are you that far north? i can usually drive across county in less than 2 hours.

I'm in San Francisco - It's likely cost prohibitive to ship - I imagine FedEx or UPS would want at least $100 to ship it. I'd happily take a 2-3 hour road trip to pick one up.

The July issue of Chev High Performance has a $349 coupon that's good until 9/6, limit of 5.

I might pick up a second one to build into a bench like the one above except I would use the add on drawer section instead of the cabinet.

can you scan that one for me?

I went out yesterday and picked up the 13 drawer tool box. Couldn't find any decent coupons online or in any of my magazines, but $389 is a good price for what you get.

I'm missing one of the drawer liners and had to rotate one of the fixed wheels (the grease fitting on the drawer-side wheel was facing inside and would be a ***** to grease up later one). Also had to tighten the wheel bolts (two were loose).

But all the drawers open & close nice & smooth (even when loaded up).

Would have been nice if they had a black one (that matches my other boxes), but I can live with it as is.

I might get the side box later on and then make a butcher-block top to fit both. Would be good to have a larger flat surface to double as a workbench.

I actually myself started with one of those box nearly a year ago. It's a good start up tool cart. I got mines for a little over $400 if I remember correctly. I've used it extensively and it works as a cart should. I ditch it after a few months of owning it because I was purchasing more tools and it didn't have enough room for it. Sold it for $100 dollars. I then got the $799 Harbor Freight Tool Cart within the same year. A few months later, ran out of room as well. I emptied it and bought a Snap On Tool Cart instead.

The Harbor Freight Tool Box Carts are good. When I was using both last year, I was moving it around all daily along with opening and closing the drawers at least 50 times a day. No problem.

The only reason I'm not using them anymore is because of the space it had. Just wasn't enough for me to expand my tools. Drawers aren't deep enough.

I joined the 13 drawer club this past week. Had the $259 coupon that expired 6-1-12, my wife and kids got it for me for Father's Day. I swapped the handle and the wheels end for end. I also greased the wheels and the swivels as they had no grease in them to begin with.

The top is dented a little in the left rear corner, can't tell with the mat on, but you can see it with it off. Doesn't bother me though. I'm either going to build a wooden hutch for the top for my power tools or possibly get the $199 tall side cabinet if I can figure out how to put more shelves in it.

A new HF opened just down the street last Friday. Stopped by to take a peek and couldn't resist bringing this pair home with me. They had five sets just sitting there in the open for all to see storage area of this store.

Just noticed Sam's has a mirror image tool cabinet on their website. I'll have to go look and see if any are coming into the store stock. Sam's is pricing theirs at $765, it comes in black, and has an "Excel" label on it.

Harbor Freight is selling theirs for $690 for the pair, without coupons. With a coupon, you can get it for $650. Could be some downward price pressure in the future?

I noticed my local Harbor Freight is carrying a new line of tool boxes that are a bright red with a nice glossy finish. They are really nice where the older ones had a darker red & with kind of a rough surface. They have a really nice side cabinet too that hangs on either side.

Hmm, the link is for a 42" wide unit, while the HF unit is 44". Other dimensions are not the same either, close though.

Harbor Freight includes the side handle in their measurements. The actual width of the cabinet is 42". I just measured the other dimensions of mine and they're slightly different than what both HF and Sam's have on their web sites:

Height:
Mine: 39 3/4"
HF: 40"
Sam's: 39.7"

Depth:
Mine: 18 1/4"
HF: 18 1/2"
Sam's: 18"

Somebody would have to compare them side-by-side but it seems to pass the duck test.

also the ads claim a 2900lb capacity, but it is actually 2633lbs, including a top box. the sticker on the back of the roller cab has all the drawer capacity for drawers and top box, then the total.

Are there ever any coupons for the top chest that bring it down lower than the $299 it is right now?

If not, the drawer volume seems to be about 50% more than the top cabinet so I'm considering mounting a second bottom chest to the top of my current bottom chest with steel and bolts.

well, i see where you are goin with this, but i dont think its the best idea

im 6'3" and i wouldnt be able to see into the top three drawers, if two bottom rollers were stacked. and thats without something inbetween the two to make mounting them together possible.

also, the bottom roller is rated to have 701lbs on top of it, and the bottom weighs 306lbs empty. so you would have 395lbs left for contents in the top roller which is nearly half the capacity lost

bottom weight empty = 306lbs
bottom capacity = 818lbs
bottom top panel capacity = 701lbs

the reason the capacity of the top is less, is because it matches what the bottom can handle.

I get what you're saying. I think the weight capacity is expecting you will be rolling it whereas mine will be sitting. In fact, I may remove the bottom chest's wheels entirely.

The "overall height" of the bottom chest is 40 inches with 5 inch casters. If the bottom were left alone and the second bottom had no wheels, that'd be a total of 75 inches or 6 foot 3 inches total. If neither had wheels, that'd be 5 foot 10 inches total.

My thought for mounting them together would be somewhat wide angle iron at the corners. This means no added space between the two chests.

What is really disappointing is that my current chest has the older wrinkle finish so the new one won't match.

Great thread!

I've just finished reading through this thread, took a while! It's pouring down rain, nothing to do right now. I'm especially drawn towards the topic on this thread about purchasing china items. I have some Snapon, Mac ( from pawn shops), other than that, I have a Chinese shop! My maxjax is Chinese too! However I could not have a decent shop loaded with neat tools without china. I do wish America could put forth some competition to get Americans excited about our homeland. The amount of ships coming into port to drop off goods must be phenomenol! And the fuel to get those ships here? Yikes!

Anyway, I purchased my lower box a few years ago at the regular price that I won't mention. Even then, I thought it was a good deal! I wish I had room for another Lower box! They look neat side by side like many of you have done.
The most recent tool I had bought was HFs electric cutoff tool, very good, saves the compressor!!!

So I am wondering if somebody can tell me why the two codes I use for the 13 drawer will not work online? I used both codes as shown a few posts ago and it tells me that they are not valid.

The first coupon ($349) expired yesterday, so I'm not surprised that one doesn't work anymore. It *might* work if you take it into the store. You can just say that you couldn't make it in during the week and see if they'll accept it?

As for the $359 coupon, I don't see any reason why the 94716579 code wouldn't work. It even says it is accepted online. If you have any way to pick this up in the store though I would do it. Shipping costs for this cabinet are killer...

Okay, I pulled the trigger on a second bottom box today. My original is wrinkle finish and the new one is glossy, but that'll have to do. Paid $349 with a coupon that was good till September I think (my dad had it).

I've been thinking of doing a quick surface buzz sanding of my 2nd hand wrinkle finish box, prime it with a high build rattle can primer, sand again and a couple of top coats with Rustoleum Sunrise Red like my old Craftsman cabinets are.

I tried both coupons online and their website said they were excluded from that offer. I checked codes and part# to make sure I had them right. Does harbor freight allow printed coupons or do they have to have the original?

You might post on your local craigslist something like "Will trade new glossy HF 13 drawer toolbox for same wrinkle finish box".
You might find somebody who bought the crinkle but likes the glossy better. Win-win.

Does the new high-gloss version come with drawer liners? on their site it doesn't say that they do anymore. The top box specifically says that liners are included. My harbor freight has the 44" locked so I can't see for myself.

Northern Tool has their Homak box in pretty much the same style on sale for 450 and there's a 20 off 100 coupon that puts that box a stones throw away from the US general box.

I can't decide which box I want!

I'm sure this has been asked in this or another of the thousan HF tool box threads, but I don't have time to read through 85+ pages, and the GJ search function isn't the greatest. Anyway, how are the top and bottom boxes supposed to be attached to each other? There didn't seem to be any hardware to do so, although I did see holes in the top of the bottom box (didn't look to see about the bottom of the top before I lifted it on.

Right now I've got the one sitting on the other, and while I'm sure once there are tools to weigh it down it might be OK, I'd rather not leave that to chance (particularly here in earthquake country).
