Harbor Freight 4 drawer versus 5 drawer cart

I just want to pick your brain for a second. I was thinking of purchasing the red 5 drawer cart and the lowest price that I see is about $170. The black 4 drawer is $100. It seems like it would be a much better deal to grab two of the black 4 drawer cart instead? Is the black one inferior in quality or is it essentially just missing one drawer?

The red one is by far the better quality cart. I have had one red and two black, the red carts depth awesome, just way more storage space overall.

I bought the black 4 drawer for myself as a welding instructor: I needed the extra height on the bottom shelf to be able to store 50 lb rod cans upright, and still push the box with all my stuff to wherever in the shop we are working that day. It has held up remarkably well.

The school just bought the red card to store parts for the automated classes. It is slightly larger overall, with better internal lid mechanism, wheels and drawer slides, less space under the drawers, but each drawer seems larger. Definitely more cubic inches of lockable storage. The steel may even be a gauge thicker, not sure.

The red one has drawer locking tabs just like the red tool box 56" which keep the drawers closed when moving the cart. Just depends on your needs. Need bigger top = go red, need bigger bottom = go black

Good choice.

The best way to see the difference is to go in the store and look them over. I was pretty dead-set on the 4 drawer (I thought the same as you, two of them is surely better than one red), but after seeing them in person the 5 drawer puts the 4 drawer to shame.

I really wanted to stick the 5 drawer box on top of a 44" lower (after removing the cart) but it looks like the cart box is too deep for that to work....

I bought the 4 drawer cart mostly because it fit under a counter in my shop. The 5 drawer cart is great if you want or need a bigger cart, and have the place to store it.

I use my cart as a portable box that I pull all over my shop that only has the most used tools. I walk over to my other roll away boxes to retrieve less frequent tools.

For me my 4 drawer box is the ideal size as a portable "pull all over the shop" box.

Sounds like an do-able interesting mod combo that has not been done yet. Each chest would be even up front while the rear of the slightly raised 5-drawer box would stick out a bit in back. My only concern is spending $170 to only use the 5-drawer box when a $99 full-depth Husky top chest would work too. Maybe wait for a heavily discounted scratch/dent 5-drawer cart...
