I rented one from Home Depot and almost broke my knee twice when it bound up and the top started to spin instead. Not sure if that is supposed to happen or not but be careful.

Going into sandy / loamy soil? They work pretty darn good.
Going into gravelly soil? Meh - they work okay.
Going into soil with rocks? Any post hole digger is gonna have problems.

Well...there's gonna be rocks. Before we bought the place, it was built in 1955, the property was leveled and they brought in a lot of fill dirt to help even it out. I have almost no top soil and lot's of rock. Part of the reason I want an auger, I don't wanna did in that stuff!

I'm planning on getting this fence done and bringing in a couple truck loads of top soil.

Never used one. My The nderstanding is that the 2 person models are easier because each person has a longer lever arm to counteract the torque. It makes sense to me,

If you have clay forget about it. Hire a crew with the big guns or get a dig stick and post hole digger and do it the old fashioned way.

My wife and I had to do this after the auger we rented wouldn't cut 2 inches down with all my weight on it. And it was a large one.

You can get hydraulic augers for digger arms, thats the way to go if you want neat round post holes, a lot easier on the body than hand held and really saves on concrete.

You may want a 5HP two person auger for that then.
