A few months ago, I saw a chain saw in a Harbor Freight ad. All I can find on their website is a Poulan, which I don't want. Is anyone familiar with the other one they sell? I know their small engines have pretty decent reviews, so I figured the chainsaw might be worth a look. It would only get used 5-6 days a year.

Not sure about there chainsaws, I had a Poulan Weed Eater that was very troublesom to start. My brother always used to make fun that Poulan stood for you need to "Pull-on" it alot to get it started.

Hi,

If you win the big one or rob a bank then buy a Dolmar PS-3410 at 7.1 lbs, this saw will last 10 lifetimes. It has a 34.0cc motor that will never die,you can use a 14inch or a 16 inch bar.

If money is tight buy a small Echo chainsaw it might not last 10X but your arms will thank-you.

I saw the Harbor Freight brand gas saws on sale they had a 18" and 16" in the sidewalk sale flyer back in March. I drove up there to buy one and they said they had a safety issue and pulled them all off the shelves. He sold me a Re-manufactured Poulan 42cc 18" for the same price as the HF. It works real good and had a brand new bar and chain in the box. I paid 119.00 for it. Poulan, Husqvarna, and many Craftsman are made by the same huge company American Yard Products a division of Electrolux.

I have an 8 year old Swedish made Husqvarna and it starts easy and cuts like a demon. The only one I like more is a Stihl, but they were out of stock when I needed a new one (we had a little 120 mph wind problem the night before).

Ahahaha, the first thing I thought when I read the title was a chain snapping, whipping back and slicing open the OP like a fish.

Ok, so I'm a little morbid.

I'm actually not too much of a HF hater, but as far as chainsaws go, I've got a Stihl.

I have an 18" Craftsman which is a copy of a Poulan and it works great but to be honest I wouldn't buy one ever again. Its a pain to start and honestly a little dangerous. When starting I have to push in the throttle trigger with my foot so it will start up, which BTW engages the chain :shocking:. If not the damm thing won't even kick over. Once it starts, man that thing runs great. Its just the starting of the thing that gets me scared.

If I were you I'd get a Husqvarna, Echo or a Stihl. Basically any higher quality saw than a Poulan or its clones.

ive got a bunch of saws, ranging from a remington electric one used to cut landscape timbers, an mcclough, a top handle echo and redmax, and 3 large stihls, ms 360s and a new 362. i love the stihls for clearing areas, but the little 14in bars on the echo and redmax make those my go to saws for smalls tasks. both were around 200, and have earned more than they cost, eventually though im gonna get a stihl ms 200t as my top handle saw. i use these from a cherry picker basket most of the time doing storm clean up as a fill in at a friends tree service

I use my saw only a few times a year also, and some years not at all. I have found my best option to be an electric one. I have a remington 14" and it does very well around the yard. And you can leave it stored for a long period and just plug in and it runes, try that with a gas one.

34cc would be fine for a branch trimmer but for a normal saw?

I just sold a 38cc because it wasn't nearly enough and bought a 45cc Husqvarna 359

Why would you try to plug in a gas one? Actually, I only use my Stihl about once a year. I just used it a few days ago, after not using it for approx a year. I usually only use it in the spring.

Would be crazy to bring out a gen set to plug in an electric chainsaw, not to mention anyone nearby would surely be telling that story to his wife and friends!

Only time I have used electric was one my grandfather had. He had a ton of 4 ft logs in a large building (probably 100x150ft) and would use the saw to cut up a stack of them in 16" lengths for the woodstove that was in there.

Chainsaws are the sort of thing you want to be gas powered. You'll always kick yourself for buying such a small saw, when you thought it was big enough to begin with. It's like a compressor, buy it the right way once. That being said, I'm partial to Husqvarna's, but Stihl is also right up there. I wouldn't buy a HF chainsaw if my life depended on it.

I'm tired of this crappy ethanol based gasoline. For 2 cycle equipment go to the airport and fill up a jug with AVGAS 100LL. It lasts years vs. a few weeks.
