Is it worth grabbing G1 or just waiting for G2 sale? I’ve only bought one icon ratchet so far, a G2 3/8” long handle comfort grip and it’s quite nice.
Depends, its a little larger compared to the g2, has 90 tooth vs 80. If they were the same price, g2 is better, but they are alot less right now. Strenth favors g2, but slightly, but if you have any warranty issues, you end up with g2 anyways.

G2 has the distinct advantage of using snap on kits from their dual 80 line, g1 doesnt. The unique ratchet in the G1 is the 1/2 flex. G2 does not have this as an option yet and feels great in my hand and is only $31. If it breaks Im swapping the head out and keeping the handle to keep it running.

To me its worth it for any of the g1 shorter flex with cushion and 1/2 15 inch flex with cushion grip. G2 would be better for the long locking indexing option for all their sizes and the option to install 3/8 kit in a 1/4 body. G2 indexing ratchets make good gifts too when on sale so your not having to loan out 😅

It was trendy for a while to transplant the 3/8" anvil from a Tekton small body repair kit into the G1 1/4" flex heads, if that's a form factor that interests you. Doing that kind of upgrade on a G2 would require sourcing Snap-on's internals and plate instead.

If we ignore the custom route, I have a normal 3/8 G1 and it's fine. It's not my go-to 3/8, but I've never felt the compulsion to toss it into a lake or anything. I think the G1s are okay but don't quite have enough wow factor to be worth recommending.
Might be a little damning that the most G1 hype I've seen came from buyers that just hoped to be able to warranty them for G2 models, after learning the G1 lineup is on its way out.

At $22 maybe I will finally make a Tekticon, hard handle and all.

I've watched too many Torque Test Channel and Project Farm videos on ratchets lately. The Icon products, including the ratchets, always rank near the top. I can appreciate that the G2 is an evolutionary improvement, but the G1's are already excellent, so it's a game of increments. I'm more than happy to accept the discount for a G1.

One thing I've noticed about these is that they are inconsistent for lube. Some are nicely greased, and others are quite dry. I open them, clean well, then assemble with a smear of Krytox grease. That doesn't do backdrag and favors, but it's good overall from my perspective.

I have two Icon ratchets, a 1/2" and a 3/4" both were dry as a bone when I took them apart. Filled them with the Superlube, as is well now.

One thing I noticed: The 1/2" says on the plate: "Do not immerse in liquids". The 3/4" doesn't say it. Both are G2s, bought during one of Sale Days in May.

Bought a set of the Icon flex-head ratcheting combo wrenches at 35% off. Couldn't stop myself. $130 for the set is a solid value. No way I'm paying regular price, $200, for that set, though.

I'm addicted to getting a discount at HF. They tried to move away from the constant coupons, but that backfired, or so I hear. More selected coupons now, or special sales. I struggle with paying full price there, unless it's something I absolutely need right away.

Has anyone else joined inside track in the store and not have it appear on your account? I have tried chat and spent over an hour with 3 chats to correct it to no avail. Super frustrating!

I remember logging in the day after I purchased it in store and it wasn't showing up. I think the next day, (so 2-3 days after) it showed up online.

Hopefully there will be another Icon sockets or ratchets sale. Or a general 15%+ off that could be applied to whatever.

I rarely buy anything from HF unless it's on sale. Not much I want from them right now, but definitely a few items are on my list.
