Anyone seen any coupons for the 20 ton shop press? Meaning to get one for years and didn't realize they jumped quite a bit in price.
I was finally able to get one for $149 last year after looking for a long time.

I now want to buy the 4 drawer tool cart, but not spending $199. They had them on sale at Father’s day and I missed them.

There is a newish (about 1.5 years old) HF in the town where I work. I don't think they're doing very well, even on weekends there aren't many customers. Since they dropped coupons and free items I hardly ever go in there.

Their attempt at going "upmarket" will flop becuase the new "names" like Bauer just aren't that great for the $$$. The Project Farm youtube guy has HF items in almost every test video and he proves weekly that HF stuff mostly just isn't that great and often downright *****.

For exmple, their Viking car jump starter failed miserably and he even tried 2 of them to be fair. Their P'Burg vise grips broke under even light force and were basically a total fail for all but the lightest duty jobs. Ditto for the HF Warrior sawzall blades. The Bauer shop vac was a rare gem, but he had concerns with weak warranty, plus places like HF probably change factories all the time so in 6 months that vac may essentially be a different item in many ways.

Many other HF items test as mediocre at best, and now with the price hikes + no coupons their tools are even less appealing.

I trash all over their ****** 90 day warranty all the time around here and many other things from them, but I have a Viking JS and the thing has been a beast for me. Have used it at least 2 dozen times over several years and a few of those were with cars with bad gas as well as dead batteries that I had to jump like 6-8 times in a row to get it moved. It is the 62749 and maybe that was just one of the good ones, though the product page includes 62749, 64412, 56797, 56798 model numbers, overall it has gotten nearly 5 stars from over 2,400 reviews. IDK. And you are totally right about their upmarket tool attempt.

BTW, did I mention their warranty is ******. LOL ...And so are their current disposable glove prices, funny how other stores have gone down in price. The old glove prices were about the only thing that normally got me in the door to walk around and grab a few other things. Oh well, a new Menards is closer and smells way better.

I heard this the other day and it makes you think. Inflation is a tax.

A few politicians have recently parroted this line, but I believe it originates from Thomas Sowell. The idea is that direct tax increases are avoided by just inflating the cost of everything and taking people's money that way instead.

Model Viking 64412 is what Project Farm tested and it was basically a total fail.

Just yesterday Project Farm put out new video with screwdriver tests, the HF P'bug set was a total fail, but it was only like $7 lol.

The problem for HF is that most P'burg stuff is really like Dollar General "tools," while the more $$$ stuff like Bauer is OK but not really anything special at its price point.

I see no real future in HF's new business model, as the pros will spend the extra $$$ for say Milwaukee, and Joe Homeowner who needs a tool "once" will grab the cheapo P'Burg/Chicago Electric stuff and just throw it away when finished/broken. So the market for Bauer/Hercules "midrange" is pretty small, and IMO the Ryobi line from Home Depot is just a better value all around than the HF stuff, esp during the Ryobi days promos. I also think their Icon wrench etc. line is a total joke for the price.

I think overall we are entering a very bad new era of rampant inflation and ongoing supply chain disruption, and China-reliant companies like HF are smack in the crosshairs of a coming sh_tstorm. If it was a publicly traded company, I'd dump my shares ASAP. They may end up as an interesting case study for future MBA students.

Sure confirms what we mostly know, that an item can be great and then you go back and it can be a turd...So double check the item numbers.

At least there's a great warranty to fall back on. LOL HF===> :fawk:

We got a harbor freight in Middletown DE about a year ago. It’s pretty quiet every time I’ve been in.
I don’t usually make my buying decisions over a coupon. If I need or want something, I buy it. If I don’t want or need it, 10-20% off doesn’t change my mind.

At the barbershop the other day I was flipping thru a magazine from 2019 that was in the rack and they had a full page HF ad.

Felt pretty nostalgic seeing the free blue LED flashlight or free 4 in 1 screwdriver and the 20% off coupon. Also blue nitrile gloves at 4.99 per box.

I was thinking how future generations will now never know the excitement of those coupons. The pre pandemic world truly was a golden age, wasn't it ?

Just to play Devil's Advocate;
A big obstacle for brick and mortar retailers is just getting people into the store (it's a type of transactions cost for the customer). You may go in there for a cheap tarp or one-use drill, but then see the pliers on display and think "I could use an new pair of lineman's or needle nose but I don't want to buy cheap ****." So you buy the nicer Doyle or Quinn brand, and avoid having to stop at a second store like HD or Lowe's just for Channellocks or Kleins. It saves you time, which is valuable.

Another point is that with all these HF specific brands, if one mfg is cutting too many corners or wants to raise prices, HF can simply replace them and keep the branding unchanged. There is no brand-power for the mfg, just for HF.

The 10 inch HF "Doyle" version of "channelocks" pliers tested very high last week on Project Farm. (Actually did much better than real Made in USA Channelocks). Of course Knipex was the best but by far the most $$$$, but the Doyle pliers for $20 tested well enough where I will prob. grab a pair soon. BTW they are made in Taiwan. Here's the test video :

I greatly reduced going to HF since they killed the coupons. I've found most of the stuff can be found on Amazon in similar options. When they had the free coupons I would grab a screwdriver set or light and give them to others that needed them.

@$20 each, these Doyle pliers are no longer cheap at all. HF is now a full fledged tool supplier now

At that price you're better off finding a deal on the real thing. There's not much I hate worse than a Chinese copy of someone else's hard work developing a product. It doesn't feel very honorable supporting that kind of practice.
If there still exists patent exclusivity to groove joint or slip joint pliers, Doyle would abide by them and license the design as they are a US registered tool company. The Doyle pliers are made in Taiwan.

I don't know what you mean by 'real thing'. If you mean a pair of Channellocks, you can go ahead and buy them. They are cheaper and worse.

Obviously, (or maybe not) I was talking about the Knipex Cobra, designed and manufactured in Germany. That is the real thing, and most definitely not a pair of old style chanellock t&g pliers.

And I'm not mad at all, but I'm also not a bottom feeder, I choose to support innovation in the things I spend my money on. Chinese manufacturing, as a whole, has a long and rich history of stealing IP, I choose not to support that kind of thing whenever possible.

For me it's because they charge as much something like B&D or Ryobi, and damn near what the red and yellow tools cost, but then they do this shiet..."We guarantee this product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship 90 days from the date of purchase. Limitations apply." That's probably the exact same warranty they had with their early super cheap Chinese tools. Nothing shows confidence in their new offerings like the shitiest warranty anywhere regarding tools. Show me a shitier warranty. LOL

I guess if the tool takes a dump 6 months later you can at least feel better while trashing it because you got to use a 20% off coupon at purchase...But not anymore. haha

they have the 30% of any item under $10 coupon again for this weekend

I know I'm late on this, but what's good under $10 nowadays?

I've only been buying big items as of late, tool carts, generators, etc., so I'm out of touch w/ their cheap stuff.

Consumerables can be a good use for the coupon... I picked up some masking tape, Gorilla glue and a couple of gallons of Peak antifreeze.

44” box is now $599.99. Dang! I bought one back in the day for $279 with a 10% coupon. Something like 254 plus tax. It is a little bigger box today, is this box worth $600 today?

Because your first 44” only cost 279 the cost per cu in can’t compare @600. Pickup a used 44” from someone upgrading if you can spare the room and need the space for more tools

Good thought- I have seen a couple used boxes on Marketplace and CL.

For a new box - At $600, is this still the box to beat or is there something better out there? This box was $500 just a month or two ago.

The price increase is what has shocked me. And I understand everything is going up in price, that ***** too.
