You forgot three golden unicorn hairs, letters attesting to your moral purity from the last two Popes, a signed selfie with Billy the Kid, and a partridge in a pear tree.
And a set of perfectly preserved hen's teeth, plus a signed note from your wife that says you were right about something and she is sorry for doubting you.

My last few annual inspections were pretty much a brake and fluid check, lights, turn signals, tire tread; not much different than what an inspection was 40+ years ago. If the CEL was on, they’d dig into what they think it was, fail the car, and give me a healthy repair estimate.
My regular pre inspection check is make sure the easy stuff is fixed and clear the codes whether there’s any or not.
It’s worked for me for the past 3 vehicles (and I keep ‘em until they’re basically give away value).

That comes with a couple years of experience so you know what you are looking at number wise and don't burn out a expensive cat doing constant regens because something is wrong upstream.

Buddy, you are preaching to the choir.
Here in Illinois the emissions "test" is no more than an interogation of the engine management computer. After of course expensive dedicated testing stations(now, I believe, leased out to a private concern) were built that actually measured emissions but I digress. On ocassion I've had to waste near a full tank of fuel to satisfy this mystical drive cycle. That worst case for a vehicle that mostly stands, consuming otherwise perhaps two tanks of fuel a year.
I had allowed the battery to run down, hence the monitors not ready.
Was my vehicle running clean? Yes but I effectively increased it's annual emissions by ~half to prove it. Makes perfect sense to me.
Does Illinois have a mileage exemption? In Pa and some other states vehicles driven less then 5000 miles a year are exempt from testing and get a exempt sticker.

Drive cycles are pretty much manufacturer/vehicle specific this is why service info is critical today here is a example from the NJ emission site> https://dep.nj.gov/wp-content/uploads/stopthesoot/06_2003-mini-drive-cycle.pdf

Rule of thumb Asian cars are pretty easy to get to complete then domestic and euro the hardest.
Most if not all will take overnight and a cold start for evap and fuel level is critical, some actually run evap after the car has been parked several hours and temps are equal to ambient. For this reason most if not all states allow 1 monitor to be incomplete and still pass.

No mileage exemption. I believe two monitors may be incomplete but am thinking evap ain't one of 'em. It's been a while and I stand to be corrected.
The link you provided is helpful, especially as it contains BMW's interpretation, thanks. Mechanics working in an urban area must have fun trying to accomplish anything resembling a drive cycle in city traffic.

for cars before MY 2000, you're allowed two non-continuous monitors not ready. For newer stuff, just one. If the car has previously failed for a cat problem, the catalytic monitor must be ready, other than that, I don't think there's a restriction on which monitors haven't run.

Usually given the choice of paying us 145 an hour to drive cycle or doing it themselves customers take the car for a ride.....I have quick access to Interstate 95 and can make Delaware in less then 10 minutes and most Asian cars go pretty quick I take them for a ride and get them through. Buddy worked for a Subaru dealer told me he took them down West Chester pike and hammered it for about 3 miles turned around and came back and they were usually good to go if everything was all right.
A lot of times if a test is taking a long time to pass it usually means a component is close to failing or has passed and failed and the ecu is not showing it as completed until it passes 3 times in a row. A borderline cat for example can fail then the ECM rechecks and it passes takes 2 fails to turn the light on 3 passes to reset the counter and turn the light off.

Save that for your Ford backhoe tractor
Well, it now has electronic ignition, plus I never really figured out how to "do the math" adjustment since it is 3 cylinders. Probably just look for an electronic tach of some sort.

Appreciate your looking out for me. :)

I’d keep it around. I still have mine from whenever back then. Still find uses for it sometimes.

HF rarely gets rid of something. They just release new and often upgraded models often under a different brand.

I'm also guessing these are Launch based, like their Icon scan tools.
The Maddox just seem like repackaged Zurich with a different look.

Way overpriced for what capabilities and features the different models have.

“Paying for the name”

6 cylinder scale multiply by 2  never really needed one for a tractor though...
