I got a set of digital vernier calipers the other day, exactly like the ones for sale on harbor freight! Then I saw the same set, exactly like the harbour freight ones for sale as an australian brand name! KC Tools fetching a much higher price. They were exactly the same ut with a small Kc sticker on them.

So this thread is the-

I brought some cheap no name tool and it is the same as "insert brand name here"

Harbour fright pry bars are the same as snap on/Bahco also

Their quick release extensions are similar to gearwrench as are their round head swivel ratchets. I've never held them up side by side but they appear to be near the same. Wonder who is copying who :headscrat

6 Piece Telescoping Gauge Set

usually sells for around $15 in the store (not seeing it on the new site)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P6WLY2/?tag=atomicindus08-20

for a few examples. There are of course better sets available as well, but these are identical sets from a couple of "manufacturers".

as far as the pry bars, not the ones i have. I have the HF's in the truck, snap on at work, and the craftsman at home, not even close to the same quality.

Ok, they're chrome and shiney but that ends the similiarities. Gearwrench roto ratchets don't have a quick release, the head is thinner and flatter, the shaft is thinner, and the action is crisper. I think the cheap price offered by Harbor Freight blinds some people. Their tools are meant to copy the real tool so, you'll think you're getting the real tool at an incedible price and cloning is definitely part of their marketing stategy. Buy what you want.

I bought the snap ring pliers with exchangable tips for $2.99. The EXACT same set is sold at Tractor Supply for $10. Just has a different name stamped on the handles.

Same with the HF pressure pots. Same exact thing sold as a different brand at TSC for a lot more $$..Plus no using a 20% off coupon. The sandblast cabinets are VERY similar as well. Over $100 more.

aren't the gearwrench just a copy of the snap on's except a lower tooth count? It's the food chain. The HF ratchets are quite good for the money.

I would agree that the Gearwrench roto ratchet is a clone of the Snap on version right down to the flat side on the back of the comfort grip handle. However, it has more teeth at 72 than Snap on's 39 on the FH747 series, not counting the new Snap on 100 tooth model FH100?

I was talking about the 100 tooth.

A neighbor of mine was working on his car and had a Pittsburgh pry bar laying ontop the fender. It rolled off and shattered its handle when it hit the concrete. :shocking:

Nice, I do own the pittsburgh set and for $8 for 4 pry bars they have worked fine. I use them when I need to hit a pry bar with a dead blow and don't want to mess up my wilde pry bars. So far they have held up to light use. They are very thin when compared to the wilde in the same size and I'm sure they would bend with some aggressive use. The entire set cost less than one wilde/craftsman pry bar though so :dunno:

Harbor Freight and Gearwrench finger ratchets are absolutely 100% identical inside and outside.

I own both and dissasembled them. I'd show pics but I sold them, you can find pics easily though on the internet. It's immediately obvious.

They're identical down to the injection molding marks on the plastic.

Also, anyone who thinks there isn't a possibility that the Harbor freight and Gearwrench roto ratchets come out of the same factory is in denial. No, they don't use the same exact body, but I've owned both and taken both apart, and they have identical machining quality and similar design.

TBH, I feel the mechanism on the HF is actually tighter than the mechanism on the GW's.

Considering I'm 99.999% sure about the finger ratchets, and almost as sure about the extensions, that opens up possibilities for a lot of the other products as well.

As stated above harbor freight doesn't actually manufacture anything they contract with companies in taiwan/china/whatever country to manufacture things for them they maybe things already being manufactured or they may be having them built to their design/specs, but I don't think they manufacture anything...they may however be in the business of fabricating tall tales especially in their new online reviews on their new website.

I have the HF prybars (paid like $9 for the set of 4). I can bend them over my knee, and they feel really cheap, but I haven't needed anything more robust as of yet, so it was a good $9 purchase to me.

If I had the money, all my tools would be high quality truck brands. Since I don't (not even close), I buy tools based on my expected utilization vs. price point. It's just good economics!

I have both HF and Gearwrench swivel ratchets. They are not the same. In fact not any of the three (3) different variations of HF swivel ratchets I have seen are the same as the GW models.

I use the HF 1/2 inch swivel and HF stubby swivel ratchets and have no complaints with them. I chose the GW for my 1/4 and 3/8 drive because they needed noticeably less torque to advance to the next click than same sized HF units. I paid about $50 for the 1/4" and 3/8" GW swivel combo, and about $20 total for the two HF 1/2" swivel units. For my needs, I'm happy with both decisions.

I also have the HF 3/8" and 1/2" three piece locking extension sets, which are very nice to use. I wanted them since I didn't have any locking extensions. I also bought a Craftsman 1/4 locking extension, with which I also have no complaints. The CM uses a button slider instead of the a collar as a release method. Both seem to work fine. I suppose it depends on what you're doing as to which is less likely to get accidentally released. The button slider definitely takes up less space. The price on the HF sets made the difference. Like many, if not most, of my HF purchases, nothing else was in the cost-benefit justifiable price range.

My non-locking extensions are Craftsman and Gearwrench. And I have an accumulation of no-name pieces that came with some K-marts sets from the 1970's and '80s. These locking HF extension sets of today are dramatically better in fit and finish than the those old school imports.

To keep it in perspective, I'm just a weekend warrior, so I can't say how they would hold up to 8hr a day shop use. And so far I don't own a single tool-truck tool. Nothing against the tool-trucks, a lot of my friends use truck tools, I like truck tools, really.

I don't believe that the HF telescoping gauge set is the same as the others you listed. Similar to, but not the same.

Please post a video of this.

These things right?

There is a set here at work that millwrights have been abusing for at least 5 years. Other than cracked handles from bashing on them with sledgehammers they are fine.

The red fluid transfer/siphon pump is exactly the same to the one sold at Kragen/O'Reilly under the Penzoil brand.

funny, this isn't about tools, but, i went on a tour of a bread company years ago and they said they baked 200+ different varieties and sold them in over 700 different labels... i'd think it could work the same with alot of HF tools....

Plenty of bad reviews on HF.....because some of the stuff is ****. Example of bad reviews on HF:
http://www.harborfreight.com/review/product/list/id/195/category/681/#customer-reviews

The same as?
These service carts:

Not to mention.....I dropped by Sears the other day (by the way, I love my old Cman stuff)........and saw similar quality carts at jacked up prices.

I know some of the sets are as i have seen them in person and have the HF sets for comparison. Hard to tell on the exact ones in the links since i can't see them in person, and don't remember the exact names on the ones i have seen locally at tool supply stores.

The 580lb 4-drawer Harbor Freight carts (on-sale with coupon from June 25-28 for only $99.99!!) are the same cart that NAPA, CarQuest and a lot of others are trying to sell for $300+
