I picked up a hardly used older yellow Harbor Freight motorcycle jack used from Marketplace for $40. I tested it out as best I could in the back of the guys truck and it seemed to work ok. Brought it home, stood on it, it seemed to work as it should. Put it under my motorcycle, started pumping, and it would not lift my bike. It would raise until it had some resistance and then would stay there no matter how much you pumped it.
I removed the bottle jack, drained the old fluid and topped it off with new fluid. On the bench it seemed to work great. Put it back together, and it held me up fine, put it under the bike, and the same thing.
So I decided to take it apart and see if there were any obvious signs of wear or other issues. The jack doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere, so it must be something internal, I just don't know what. I also can't seem to find a rebuild kit for that jack that makes sense since the entire unit can be bought for $200 or less new.
So I guess my questions are as follows:
1. Does anybody know where to look internally that would cause it to do what it is doing?
2. Does anybody know of a rebuild kit for these?
3. Or, does anybody know of a jack that could be swapped in that doesn't cost more than I paid for the unit itself?
This is the type of jack I am talking about.
