My guess is the seller is using stolen credit cards to drop ship them.

Well I just received a 8 hp engine that I bought off eBay. 83 dollars shipped! It is brand new. I put oil and gas in it and it fired right up on 3rd pull. Sounds good and it's quiet. I bought it to replace the engine on my log splitter.I feel it will be fine. Just wanted to let you guys know it's not a scam.. super happy

They are probably purchased directly from China from the same manufacturer. You'd be surprised just how cheap stuff is, and how you can work with the manufacturer to do pretty much whatever you want.

Nothing shady about that. They are rip-off Chinese engines to begin with.

Just check sites like Alibaba to see if you find an identical engine. If you can, that's probably where they are coming from. I've worked with manufacturers over there before, and it's really, really easy.

Could be bulks sales from HF, but I don't see what the point would be when you can get them from China for next to nothing; unless they're bought at warehouse auctions right off the dock, which does happen. You can get pallets of just about anything fresh off the boat if you look around.

That's a pretty good guess. The very same thing is going on with the Daytona jacks from Harbor Freight selling on ebay for 1/2 or less than HF typically sells them for.

Anyone who has been following that Harbor Freight 3 Ton Daytona Jack thread has figured out that's what's going on. Lots of ebay seller accounts with little to no previous sales feedback on ebay keep popping up which ebay then keeps closing the accounts and cancelling the transactions and sending the buyers a notice that "Your recent eBay transaction may be from a compromised account" but often by the time they do that the transactions have cleared through paypal and the jack is already on the way being shippedfrom Harbor Freight.

Sometimes the buyers receive their jacks but that's only if Harbor Freight doesn't discover the payment method to them was fraudulent first in which case they have sometimes been able to stop the shipment, even when it was 'out for delivery' and have it returned to them.

I was one of those buyers who actually bought and received one of the jacks before we started figuring out this wasn't just a deal to good to pass up worth sharing to our friends here at GJ but rather part of some sort of a scam. As best we can figure someone or someones is/are using hacked ebay accounts to list items for sale from Harbor Freight, then most likely using stolen credit card data to purchase from Harbor Freight and have shipped to the buyer. It's a bad thing all around. In hindsight I wish I had just bought my jack from Harbor Freight.

I bought my ******** Ebay from a seller that had a few years of selling and feedback for $80 shipped to my door. I don't think I would pay $179+tax for it. It is a good jack but not $179+ to me.

Jobbers. They buy returns from HF, Northern, etc and make the needed repairs and sell them at a discount. They buy the engines, jacks, leaf blowers, whatever by the pallet which is why they have quantities of 20, 10, etc.

Bingo....

This is pretty common. There have been sellers doing this with Craftsman stuff for years. These could also just be overstock items that were purchased at a liquidation sale.

Yes, ebay has been playing a game of whack-a-mole and hasn't caught every account that is/was selling these jacks (and Predator engines and other Harbor Freight items - see below) in that price range. New accounts with the listings are popping up every day. Most of the seller accounts had been members for a year or more, usually with little to no feedback activity, and they were from locations all over the country.

The details vary because accounts being used don't appear to have been fake, but rather ones someone had surreptitiously gained access to. The one thing they have in common is that they are all selling the same Harbor Freight items at 'too-good-to-be-true' prices using the same headers ("3 Ton Daytona Professional Steel Floor Jack - Super Duty, FREE SHIPPING!!!", "8 HP (301cc) OHV Horizontal Shaft Gas Engine EPA New 100%", "12 in. Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw With Laser Guide System New 100%", "17 gal. 1.8 HP 150 PSI Oilless Air Compressor New 100%", ... just to name a few) all using the same stock photos, same description, usually starting out with more than 10 available.

In the Harbor Freight Daytona Jack thread there are quite a few members (myself included) who placed an order from almost as many different accounts only to at some point later received an email from ebay like this one:

2w67yp4.jpg

That's 12 different GJ members I linked above who got that same email, and that was just what I was able to get in a few minutes using GJ's thread search function which leaves much to be desired. I'm sure there are more.

Many of those who ordered got that email from ebay well after the paypal transaction had already went through and often already had a FedEx tracking number for it showing their jack was coming from Harbor Freight in Dillon SC, however in some cases Harbor Freight was able to have the item recalled by the shipper before the delivery was made.

Given that ebay is catching so many of these listings and notifying the purchasers that the seller's account may have been compromised by a third party, and that Harbor Freight has on occasion been able to stop the shipment on items already in transit, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on.

I too bought mine on ebay because it seemed like a good deal at that price, but now in hindsight had I known then what I do now I wouldn't have purchased it that way.

If you check through the Daytona jack thread I've linked all over the place above, you will see that dozens of people have received their jacks bought at ridiculous prices off ebay and they are not used returns. They are brand spanking new being shipped straight from Harbor Freight in Dillon SC. The same scammers are doing the same thing with these Predator Engines, 12" Sliding Compound Miter Saws, Air Compressors, etc. They are almost surely laundering proceeds from stolen credit card data this way.

Just an FYI - since I posted my original comments I had occasion to speak with a person at Harbor Freight corporate who is involved with loss prevention and theft and apparently these Predator engines that are being sold at suspiciously cheap prices INCLUDING free shipping on eBay are in fact stolen and not authorized by HF. HF is aware of the issue and there have been many HF customers calling them to alert them about the suspicious activity. They are aware of the issue and are trying to stem the flow of this stolen merchandise and actively investigating the matter. So if you buy one of these Predator engines at those cheap prices keep in mind that you're buying merchandise that "fell off the back of the truck". (wink wink) ...

I don't know how they get away by declaring the package as a gift, thought. Also don't know how one can ship a package around the world for $2.50, including product cost.

1. Small packages aren't worth the time or effort for them to try and collect a few pennies on customs.

2. The Chinese & US government subsidize shipping costs for them to ship packages from China to the USA... It puts the hurt on small US businesses because it actually costs more to ship within the country than to import something halfway across the world... I have bought things from China before for literally less than a dollar, shipped... It's crazy...

Well, what the HF loss prevention person didn't tell you is that the items are not stolen, per se, but rather being purchased with stolen credit card data. So yeah, I guess they they are 'stolen' in that sense.

When you order one of these 'too good to be true' ebay deals on Harbor Freight items (which you should not do as you would be supporting an elaborate credit card fraud scheme), the shipper of these items is Harbor Freight.

And if/when Harbor Freight catches in time that the item they sent was paid for with stolen card data they will stop the delivery and have the item returned to them.

Just got off the phone with FedEx. They stated that the seller requested that it be returned.....and they stated the seller was Harbor Freight, not any eBay seller.

There is a local place in Buffalo that sells the store returns or broken items from HF and craftsman and anything you can think of on ebay. I have bought a bunch of stuff and picked up local. Bought a wagner sprayer you could tell it was used with paint overspray and someone took it back when they were done, it works great and was 1/3 price.

Probably direct shipped from China.

Last month I ordered a pack of two lawnmower air filters from an eBay seller. Price was something like $2.50 INCLUDING SHIPPING. I didn't notice that they were to be shipped direct from China, but became suspicious when the expected delivery date was a month out.

The package eventually arrived, with a lot of Chinese writing on it and a customs declaration as a "gift"

The filters seemed to fit ok, construction was solid, and they beat the estimated delivery date by a week.

I don't know how they get away by declaring the package as a gift, thought. Also don't know how one can ship a package around the world for $2.50, including product cost.

My thoughts are that this business model if successful, is going to put the hurt on a lot of importers and will even affect Amazon's business model.

I am new...and I see how trolls get slammed on here...so I thought I would be upfront with my name. :)

China has very cheap postage to US. try and return it...your $2.50 would turn into $34. There are many US based sellers that dropship from China...not me. For one shipping takes too long...and another if you have problem you're both screwed.

I do but in bulk very cheap from China...and for pennies I can even have my logo out on the item. Name brands always sell for more.

You can buy many cheap items from China...even HF tools. Now these sellers that steal HF images...that's illegal...but often times you are allowed by the wholesaler to use their image...and check this...most of the time it is the same image as HF. How much mark up...now that depends...and the Chinese wholesaler will ALWAYS negotiate...I have an item that I sell for $295. The Chinese wholesaler list it for $235 in bulk....I have to buy a minimum of 40 to get it for $235. After negotiations...I get it for $147. and they pay shipping...oh and I only buy 15 at a time. Now, do I still sell it for $295? Yes, on sale! In local retail stores it sells for about $350. Do I feel bad? No...not one bit.

Ebay is a lot of work...listing packaging...it's a pain in the but... But when you are selling over $20k a month your to get about the pain.

I am a small seller compared to some...I have been on eBay for 13 years. Ebay changes their policies and I fight with them...a lot. EVERY time you call CS...it's like the IRS you get a different answer every time.
For years I sold civil war movies. Ebay removed those listings because there was a confederate flag. I called them
..pointed them to their policy that states that the confederate flag can be displayed for historical purposes... They claimed I spread hate. And told me to read the the policy...I got so mad I hung up. I filed an appeal...lost....2 weeks later...they emailed and said they reconsidered and I can list my movies. It's a good thing I have hundreds!

Anyway...hope my rambling was helpful...typing on my phone *****. And I should have looked...this post was probably 6 years old. :)

Some people call it "open distribution."
The actual mfg will sell to anybody with cadh and a min order.
"ebayseler" is in head to head competition with HF.
Same product, less overhead, less service equals lower cost/price.
