Is there a harbor freight shop press that comes with a air assist? Is there one part number that is better than another?

Yes I searched

Looks like the 50 ton and the bench top 20 ton have an air hose.
Or purchase a replacement air jack for the others as Lucid said.

ck,
Depending on what you are planning to do with the press the air assist can be a blessing or a curse. With the air assist it is very hard to try to move something a small amount with the press. If all you are planning is to brute force push stuff on and off it should be fine.

I have the 20 ton floor model and bought the air/hydraulic jack. Works well. The air/hydraulic jack fits right in. Watch for sales - they both go on sale regularly. As was stated the air unit still has a handle for manual operation so you can easily do fine adjustments or use the air.

They tend to have several part numbers for the same thing but for the 20T press:

32879

Air/hydraulic 20T jack: 91315

Not sure, but ndnchf does - check his thread on the press. All I remember is the above # is NOT the one he recommends... Steve

The one above is the one I have.

I got it for 2 reasons. No vehicle large enough to get it home, and shop door not large enough for one already assembled (small man door, and drill press behind it so door doesn’t open 100%)

So far it has done everything asked of it, and I have NOT been kind to it...

I’ll have to look up his thread and see why he doesn’t recommend it. Maybe because it is bolted together and not all one piece/welded(?)

Of quote in this thread by ndnchf: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=373638&showall=1

"One thing of note, the new #60603 20 ton presses are a bit different than the old orange versions. The beams are not formed to a U shape like on the orange version, they are forged square U-beams. Also be aware that there are two versions of the current gray 20 ton press. The bolt together #60603 and the welded together #32879. My preference is the 60603 because it can be assembled with good grade 8 bolts and trued up and squared during assembly. Unlike the 32879 that is welded (maybe good, maybe not) and sometimes it is not square. I think they are both an improvement over the old orange models. The 60603 comes with cut steel plates, not cast. I cant speak for the 32879, but I think they are cut steel too. Maybe someone can confirm that."

I recently got the #60603. The only thing that I haven't fixed is that when using my Swag Offroad press brake, the press moves out of square at the top. I am still using the factory long bolts and not individual grade 8 bolts at the top like many upgrade. My upright c channels also pinch in a little more at the top so ill be curious if I can get it to stay square with the grade 8's.

OP, if you change the factory jack to the air model, HF does have one with a back plate that has a lot of holes drilled in it (supposedly to reduce the noise) that is recommended. I have not made the change yet.

HF seems to currently have a coupon for the air/hydraulic jack; if not

http://www.hfqpdb.com/best_coupon/20+TON+AIR_HYDRAULIC+BOTTLE+JACK

And yeah, it's worth it; all you give up by changing over is a chance to wear out your arm faster. The air valve is your "fast forward", and the (still functional) hand pump is your "sneak up on" control. win/win... Steve

PS - another mod you'll be happier doing sooner than later is replacing the jack's roll pin (and having to grab the jack handle 'way too often) with a KNOB...

I haven't tried this (yet) but it just came to me; if you envision EVER wanting/needing to "borrow" that jack for temporary use under a vehicle, you could make the "knob" from a piece of small square tube, pinned ACROSS the screw on the jack (a cross-bar, IOW) then graft a piece of the next size up tubing (with one of the 4 sides cut off, making a "U" channel) onto the original jack handle. (Open side OUT)

That way the air/hyd jack would still be "finger friendly", but you could reach it with the longer handle for under-vehicle use.

There's not a lot of "wiggle room" in that area, so the small tubing pieces would need to be the smallest that'd fit over the head of the pinned valve head; then 1 size bigger for the jack handle part.

IF you don't need that option, then by all means don't read this - it'll only slow ya down :=)) Steve
