I just got a 13 drawer rolling tool chest from harbor freight and i also have a 4 drawer tool cart from there. I am considering on repainting the both of them to have a different color from the dull red color, and so they both match. im thinking yellow, orange, lime green, or even a brighter red, and then clearing the color. im not going to sand away the crinkle finish on the tool chest. what would you guys suggest on color? has anybody done this?

I saw a black one and man did it look sweet, but it came from the factory like that. No idea what it would look like if you DIY.

yeah i saw pictures of it online and it did.. i love the toolbox it is a great value for the money but the color and flat finish is imo the biggest drawback on this box. just thought i should paint it now while its new and doesn't have tools in it yet or grease and other stuff.

This is the only picture I have of mine....

Sanded her down, 3 coats of Light tan on the box
Scuffed the handles and put 3 coats of Brown on...

Still looking good to this day... I used some leftever paint that I used to paint my duck boat with... Not bad for a free upgrade

It would be awesome if you knew someone who was able to do powder coating at a good price. I'd really make an interesting custom paint job if I had access to the equipment.

Funny that you mention that because I intern at a corvette shop and they give extremely good prices on stuff and they also own a powder coating business separate on the side.they have one of the biggest booths in the state.. Its just getting it there would be a pain in the *** as I don't have a truck.

Looks good. Glad to see somebody else with this idea in mind. Who knows I may even sand the crinkle finish off. Was it thick?

oh , but it would kill the resale :)

Might make it better people might mistake it for something else :bounce: Plus HF getting rid of the 20% coupons and raising the price of the thing probably will make ours go UP in value...I wonder if the top chest will ever go on sale for $250? $300 "on sale" is too much IMO.

Good to know. Did you sand the crinkle finish all the way off to metal, till it was smooth or just scuff it up

Nothing says "Industrial" like fluorescent pink.

Perhaps two-tone Black/Yellow?

Try the "liquid sander" or deglosser. I had good success with it. I got the orange bottle from home depot.

Has anyone just shot clear over the dull red?

thats what my dad was suggesting. but i just thought hell repaint it how i want it.. i think i decided on yellow with black handles like how cornwell boxes are. im going to start with the tool cart first then do the box.

cheaper to build your own oven and coat yourself than pay someone to do it... that's what we did.

It was really easy to get the "crinkle" finish off. Like I said before, it only took about 3 hours to get the prep work done.

I didn't paint the whole box but I did repaint the drawers on mine and then shot them with clear coat. I would also repaint the inside of the box because mine was starting to rust already. Turned out well I think...

Sorry, i saw Senior member, w/~100 posts, not admin, or paid advertiser, banner advertiser.... Guess where I buy my powder? News flash, it's the largest supplier of powder in the country Mr E-thug. I send ALL of my customers there MYSELF to check out colors... it's no secret, you're no more special than anyone else with google. I'm honest with people, 2 weeks and ~$2k, you too could build your own 12k watt oven, and for $1k you can buy a legit powder gun, I'll even help.

I thought the point of this forum was so we could help each other? Go take your pissy business attitude on someone else's FREE PUBLIC forum.

:headscrat Unless I missed something, his comment about there being a forum for everything had absolutely nothing to do with your post, he was quoting cdan's post about how to build an oven. Talk about being oversensitive. :shocking:
