Harbor Freight tool box review

Hello everyone,
I've been reading this forum for a long time, and I've greatly appreciated the advice/reviews/etc that everyone contributes.

I've worked on my cars and equipment since I was 15 years old, and I've slowly been collecting all the tools I need over the last 8 years. Now, I'm getting ready to start a garage with a buddy. Starting a business takes a long time, and in the meantime, I got a job as a diesel mechanic.
Long tool story short, I didn't want to take my cman box to work, because it's my first box (about 5 years old and USA made), and I figured I'd need something bigger anyways. So, I got the 44 inch HF box. I'm kind of on a budget, so right now I just have the chest, and later on I'll be adding the top box and the side attachments.

I had been looking at the new line of cman boxes, and I thought that they'd be well made, because my old cman box is very well made and has lasted for 5 years of daily use. But, I was wrong. I went and did some research in store, and I was really surprised by how bad the boxes felt. The side walls are thin, the lids don't always close well (they don't line up with the box itself), the casters are pathetic, and most importantly, the drawers feel super flimsy and cheap.
After I decided not to get cman, I started looking around on here and found Mister Moose's review of several different boxes, and I went to look at the Harbor Freight box. It was on sale for 369, so after inspecting it in store I decided that it defiantly is the best deal for the money.

So here are some pics:

I know my small tool collection is lacking, but I'm slowly building it as I go.

So a few quick notes on the box:
-It comes fully assembled, and it weights 350lbs unloaded. Unpacking it is a pain, because it comes on a wooden frame, and it has to be lifted out of the frame. Defiantly a 2-3 person job.
-It comes with drawer liners and the mat for the top. (the drawer liners are foam instead of the gripper stuff that you can buy in a roll. I may be relining it later on.
-The casters are well made, and it seems to roll well, even on my garage floor which is littered with the stuff that falls off cars during winter
-The handle on the side can be mounted on either side. It is sturdy and I'm comfortable pulling it around by the handle
-Even with a decent amount of weight in the drawers they all open well and without any jumping or grabbing.
-The drawer locks are nice, but they need to get broken in. When I first got it, you could pull the whole box sideways just trying to get a drawer open. After 3 weeks of use it seems to be loosening up.

If anyone has anything they'd like to know about the box, or any other pics they'd like, let me know.

Congrats, that is the most popular box here and a good choice. A tip for the next one is stand it on end and take the pallet off the bottom then flip it onto the wheels and unboxing is an easy one person job.

Yea, great box. I went a little overboard on New Years Day.

And now I'm thinking about a built in like onelochevy did.

Oh, and I blame this website for my upgrade from an old Snap On I used for 30 years.

About 16" wide and 22" long? 15 on the two larger racks, 10, on each smaller side one and 3 on the back corner one it looks like? Looks perfectly for the drawer. Where you bought that rack at, did they have one without privisisons for the hex keys?

Btw, welcome to garage journal. And you'll love that box. Wait till the decease hits you and you want the HF 56" or 72" box. :D

I got the wrench organizer at Harbor Freight in their tool box organization area. They were like 12 dollars each, and they fit perfectly in the drawers. They're very well built. I bought 2, and I love em. Also, They're easy to cut. Like if you want one part of it, or if you want to divide them up into different drawers and sections, they're very easy to cut and customize.

I feel like that organizer exhumes too much space. Personally I made wire springs by taking cable and wrapping it around a pipe to organize my wrenches. Just an idea if anyone wants some more space conscious.

I just bought a 44 and plan to add a side box too. But the drawers are a B**** to open/close because of those stops. I have to really tug on it to open .

Ya, that's the main problem I've had with it. But, like I said in my initial post, it seems to be getting easier to open, after I've been using it for a while.

Hopefully it'll get easy enough that I can lock each drawer when I'm done with it, instead of leaving them unlatched all day.

Mine have gotten easier with use. You can adjust the tension if you want. If you remove a drawer and look at the end of the slide you will see the corners are bent. The bent corners slip over a rubber pad at the back of the box slides to create the detent. Bent the corners outward to loosen the tension and inward to tighten the tension. A crescent wrench worked best for me when I adjusted mine.

Mine had a couple of drawers that had almost no detent when I first got it. I had to tighten them and loosen a few others while I was in there. Didn't take long at all.

Next thing you'll say is that you need the 56" they sell. There have been several that have done that. Personally I'd like the 56", but don't have the room on any wall. I currently have a 41" Craftsman in the sunburst orange color they no longer make and an older 26" from the 90's that's Made in the USA. I thought about getting the same one you have because of the full length drawer, but have a hard time parting with the two I have now.

When I got the box I shot some slick50 onto the slides that helped out a little. But Ive been leaving the drawers unlatched to. It annoys me when i have to sort of slat the drawer and my screw drivers are all pushed pack an inch or too. Sort of a neat freak when it comes to my tool box..The shop is another story:lol_hitti

I am at the point where I am saying I need the 72" they sell. Lol

Lol did I say NEED? Didn't think so bud. As a business, asking permission is the polite thing to do. OP could get upset that Harbor Freight is using the images he took his own time to post for their advertising.
