Was looking at the Pittsburgh broken bolt extractors at HF.
Anyone have any experience with these? Are they any good?

Thanks

Their version of an EZ-out? Tapered thing with a sort of left handed screw thread to it, that fits in a tap handle? I've never had much luck with the *real* ones much less HF ones.

I have heard tell that the HF left handed drill bits are actually kind of decent. I bought a set but haven't had to use them yet.

Doesn't matter who makes them, they ALL ****.

In forums that deal with anything mechanical, the most common thread is "I broke a bolt off, tried to use an easy-out and it broke off, WTF do I do now?"

The answer is don't use one. You're in over your head, knowledgeable people know better than to use one.

I have a set of the HF extractors...compared to the old ezouts I used to have they are way too brittle and break way too easy. I never broke an extractor until using the HF ones. I normally use extractors on outboard engines that have a lot of corrosion and are stuck hard. In my opinion the HF extractors are good for paperweights.

Get a good set of left hand drill bits (not HF but a good set) and an automatic centering punch. Start with the smallest bit and slowly work up in size until the broken bolt spins back out for you. Take your time. Work slowly and carefully. You will get it.
