Hard to find socket

1'' drive, 12 point, deep, impact, 1'' socket (must be EXACTLY this configuration)

I have been looking for this socket for a few weeks now. The only two manufacturers that make it (that I can find) are Grey Pneumatic, and Wright Tool.

Wright is a bit pricey and I cant find it from any "larger" retailers, even online, other than mom and pop stores.

The Grey Pneumatic one is unheard of, separate from a set.

Does anyone know of any other manufactures? Or of a good, reliable source that can sell me the Wright socket? The Wright part number is 8982.:beer:

I've got 3 12-point 1" 3/4" drive sockets, all old as ****, bunch of odd sizes in the set too. 1" drive is a tough find.

Funny, but I never actually checked eBay, I have only had bad experiences. But I will keep that option open. I am kinda leaning towards the Wright one anyway.

What is it for?

Flywheel bolts on Caterpillar G3500 series engines. The bolts are recessed in the flywheel, and the torque spec is retarded. I may even have to turn the socket down a bit on the lathe. The one "shop use" that we have is cut, so I cannot tell the brand.

I like the price on Zoro, but it ships from Wright (5-10 days). The Amazon link is appealing if I decide to grab the GP. Thanks!:thumbup:

Got a few on my phone here actually.

This first one is of a 3516 (3500, 16 cylinder) natural gas engine. Dual turbo, huge monster. We get the most of this style.

And just cause im sure everyone would love to see..... These are pictures of an engine we just got in yesterday. It is destroyed. This would be a 3512 (3500, 12 cylinder) diesel fracking engine. This is a monster with 4 turbos..... as you can see, #11/12 connecting rods are trashed. The counterweight flew off and is lodged in the block on the other side.

As of now, the major components that are obviously destroyed are the block, crank, oil pan, and connecting rods (i guess others are bent due to the lockup).

It was nice that there was an access port so you could diagnose the damage.

Thanks for sharing the pics. have you posted any of that in the diesel mechanics thread? I am sure they would like it too.

When it first came in, my boss called the machinest over to diagnose it. He brought his micrometer, and calipers and whatnot, as he normally would... saw the hole, turned around and said "f*ck that". As a micrometer would be of no use.:lol_hitti

Wasnt aware of the thread, I will check it out tomorrow. I gotta get some rest :lol:
