Not garage related but an install question for the Kitchen. Are kitchen dishwashers and garbage disposals now plugged in vs hardwired?. If so what's the reason other than code? I'm in northern VA..

I put a plug on the one I installed at my daughter's house. I think I used a 14 gauge, molded end, 5' "whip". All hard wiring in the kitchen was 12 gauge 20A.

I also put a whip on the microwave/range hood combo.

The reason is to have a disconnecting means at the appliance if servicing. Article 422-33 (A)

My dishwasher is hardwired, but the garage disposal plugs into an outlet under the sink.
