Hardened T5 screwdriver bit

Does anyone know of a product offering of a T5 1/4" hex drive screwdriver bit that is hardened and not a 1" insert bit. I have found that Wiha makes a T5 in a TiN coating but it looks like only in a 1" long bit.

I'm hoping to find some type of coating in a standard 2" long bit.

Have you looked at PB Swiss? I have a set of their long Torx bits, and they're very strong.

I don't think that the coating hardens the bit, but I could be wrong.

Also, T5 is pretty small. May not be many options.

The coating supposedly decreases wear on the lobes of the bit. We are using the second type shown in an repetitive manufacturing application to drive a stainless screw and the lobes of the standard bits are wearing off quite quickly.

My opinion is that T5 and even T6 is 4mm precision hex territory. Having a drive that small in a 1/4 hex is already pushing it. Then to add to your request, you want in power bit format (likely for a power tool)! Are you using a torque limited device?

I have several PB Swiss T5, they work great for the few times I have used them. I mainly use Wiha pentagonal lobe for my Apple products, I would NEVER use it in power tool.

call apex bits or download their catalog. they do many bits in various heat treatments. not sure about coatings, tho

another q is what's causing the wear? dis-similar metals or power or what? may also be something to look into

You'd have to take up those concerns with the engineers who designed it. Due to the type of products that we make changing any aspect of it is not at all an easy proposition.

They are used in a torque limiting device, a 1/4" drive screwdriver type torque wrench actually.

I doubt it is dissimilar metals. My guess actually is that the operators are not fully seating the bit into the screw before they fasten it.

It was either Zephyr or Apex that has a special line of industrial repetitive-use grade bits. I remember them being marked as such, perhaps both companies have them.

There is also the Apex torx align or snap-on HD removal type bit. Those are actually different bit-shapes that are stronger and seat-better.

AFAIK coating really has nothing to do with snap on gold bits actual peformance. Hardened coatings are typically designed for friction and/or corrosion. They are too thin to offset any improper hardness/weakness in the underlying metallurgy.

They don't make HD or -W- bits in T5 unfortunately.

For the audience, I believe the NM max T5 is something like 0.32NM, and weaker one can be half that.

So using a proper torque control is obviously essential as is using the correct bolt quality (materials as well as strength). Crappy fasteners could be a real issue, but that may not be a variable for the OP that can be controlled.

Hopefully that wera bit will work out.
