Hardi board vs steel

Hi. I’m new to the group. We live in Missouri and are researching options for a 30 x 40 attractive utility building at our home on 10 acres. We want to be consistent with the building materials of our home. Does anyone have experience using hardiboard on a pole building? Steel seems so industrial looking but we want to be cost conscious while achieving something aesthetically pleasing.

Not an expert but from personal experience, hardie is extremely heavy for a pole barn type structure and if you do use it you will also need sheathing, hardie will break easily from hail stones hitting in an 80 mph wind. I used it on a carport I had closed in by screwing it to bare stud wall, luckily I had not installed walls inside yet, was able to patch using plywood squares from inside held by construction adhesive and concrete patch cement to finish. It's good till the next bad hail event when I'll have interior walls to deal with.

Does steel look THAT bad?

I sure don't think so...more and more houses are sporting it on their roofs, let alone a color matched outbuilding.

Welcome to the forum from Southwestern California. Hail is not something we are concerned with in Coronado.

Hardie Board is expensive. Never use a saw. Use shears or a guillotine.
