Hardware sizing question.

I need to build a stand for my woodward fab bead roller. It has two pre-drilled and tapped holes. Luckily I had a bolt off another piece of equipment that fits it. With my calipers, the shaft measures .36. The head is SAE 9/16, and looks to be coarse threaded. Do I just buy a 9/16 bolt at the store or can the same 9/16 head have different sized threaded shafts?

A bolt with a 9/16 head on it will usually be 3/8 thread. 3/8 being .375 fractional.

So you if it is coarse thread you would want a 3/8-16 bolt of the appropriate length. 3/8-16 being 3/8 diameter with 16 threads per inch.

And yes from time to time a bolt with a given head size will have a different thread to it than normal. I don't think it is as common as it once was. But there are some specialty bolts that don't follow the common theme.

That is correct.

You will often hear people refer to a bolt as a 'quarter twenty' if it is 1/4-20 bolt meaning 1/4 inch thread width with 20 threads per inch along its length.

When specifying a fastener the thread is usually the most important with the head size being less important.

Buy a bolt/thread gauge for a couple bucks
