Sorry to say our last old line family owned hardware store is closing soon. Public Hardware in Durham, NC. Opened in 1924. Closing in the next couple of months. Anyone in this area, go by there soon if you need any hard to find stuff. They have long had items the big boxes didn't have or were thin on. Also among the very few hardware stores still selling guns and ammunition. This makes 6 hardware stores that have closed here in about 10-15 years. We still have a couple of Ace franchises that may be family owned, not sure.

RIP Public Hardware.

News article said it was costing them more every year to operate. I assume taxes going up. They are downtown and a lot of building has been going on. Million dollar condos are springing up, so I'm sure tax rates are increasing.

A local hardware closed very shortly after Home Depot opened a store less than a mile away..
The owner told me "This town is not big enough to support both stores", I bought some tools from him.

i would guess the china made box store ran the american hardware out of business, it would be nice if both could exist in the same area of town

I have long tried to buy from local stores when I could. Big box has the edge in keeping longer hours that mom & pop can’t afford to do.

we had a nice local Hardware store for years. They sharpened ice skates, lawn mower blades etc. A Mom Dad and a son run it.. After 60 years it shut down. It was a sad Day!!

Bummer. So many small towns don't have any kind of hardware store any more. Makes doing a project a nightmare if you forgot something or something else unexpectedly broke. 1 hour plus round trip to the box store and hope they have it in stock. Oh well I guess. Raze the economy for every last cent to funnel into your retirement and F everyone else coming after you I guess.
