Has anyone tried to hardwire an extension into their welder, or is just buying and extension cord the safest route. Im only needing about 25'. Mig LE Weld Pak 180HD

Yup, just wire your own. My Syncrowave didn't come with a plug on it....just a 10' lead cut flush. I got 20 feet of 6ga wire from Lowes, along with one of the large **** connector kits with heat shrink and added it.

My smaller MM180 came with a plug...but the cord is only 5 or 6 feet long. I am going to cut it and splice in another 20' of wire...

I understand why you are thinking about it, a good set of plug/receptacle is gonna cost you $40.

you can buy 10 gauge 2-1 service cord about $2 per foot. wire it directly to the panel breaker and be done with it.

Was 2-1 a typo? I'm no expert, but doesn't he want a 3 wire 10 gauge wire?

Wire it with a plug/receptacle and an extension. You'll want to move it some day, or use the extention for something else besides the welder, like a plasma, large dp..

Build your own - go to an electrical supply house and get yourself 50' of SOOW cord in the size of your choosing - I like 8/3 myself but you may not need that large if your welder is small - and buy whatever ends you like. I use standard 50 amp appliance plugs but if you like you can use NEMA twist locks or whatever. If you use the appliance plugs like I do (cheaper) for the female extension cord end you will have to do a junction box on the end of the cord and use a wall receptacle and cover plate. You can get strain reliefs or compression fittings to run the cord into the box. It works quite well and sits flat on the floor which is nice.

A commercial 8 gauge 50' cord would cost a lot more than the $150 or so that you will spend building your own.
