Hardwood Plywood type & storage question

I've got several plywood questions. A friend of mine has a lot of plywood that he got from work that he said didn't pass quality control. It looks like really nice stuff (from the pictures he sent) & he said that it maybe had a corner nicked or some other very minor defect.
He said they are: "Flat die boards made of either Ash or Hard Maple. 7 Layer veneer sheets. 48x72 or 48x60, 5/8 or 1/2 inch thickness."

My question is: What does: "flat die boards" mean & are they made for certain things, or can they be used for just about anything?
I've heard of Rock Maple.. Is hard maple similar & is it hard to cut?

I'm not sure what i'll make out of it, but for the price, it's hard to turn down.
I might do cabinets & shelves, tables / workbench tops, etc. I was always thinking about building a storage / mower shed, would it work for that too?

Also, is plywood very sensitive to storage conditions? The only place I have to store it right now would be a rented mini-warehouse & it can get damp in there in spring due to condensation off the floor.
Does it need to be stored flat, or can it be upright against a wall?

(I'm more metalworker than woodworker, so I don't know all the wood terms) Thanks for any input.

Ayuh,.... Generally speakin', hardwood plywood is used for cabinets, where it stays Dry,...
It's an Interior plywood,....

Rock maple, hard maple, 'n sugar maple are All the same tree,....

Plywood like yer talkin' 'bout prefers to be stored tightly stood against the wall,...
Straight up, 'n down,...
If it's leanin', it'll bow,....

die boards are usually of much better quality than standard interior grades, as they remove stuff that will cause voids, holes, dips and smudges that would show up in laser or die cut products that need to hold a finish or opaque/clear covering.

I would take them in a heart beat

storage should be as close to perpendicular as possible or strongly supported, if not stored on edge.

enjoy

I can get 48"x60" for $5 or 48"x72" for $10.
1/2" or 5/8", same price.
I'm not sure what I'd all make with them, but for that price, it's hard to pass up.
I'll probably build some shelves, cabinets, workbench tops, etc.

I need a utility / mower shed built. Would this work for that, or does it need to be "outdoor" plywood?

Flat Die Boards are composed of select hardwood veneers, bonded in a specific manner to ensure the panels remain flat and the cutting-rule tolerances will be precise. This plywood is widely used in production of die cutting (or dies) in packaging and printing industry.

No, unless it is PT or marine grade, it is not intended for outdoor use..

And if it were me, I would buy every single piece at those prices!

By the pictures he sent....i'm guessing he's got 200 sheets+. Maybe a lot more.

I haven't done a lot of work with hardwood (did some red mahogany a couple years ago though)
He's got Ash & Hard Maple. I've also heard of Rock Maple. Is hard maple & rock maple similar? Is it much harder to cut than ash?

Man, 200 sheets.. I wish I was in the neighborhood!

Hard/rock/sugar maple are just different names for the same tree.

Assuming we are still talking about plywood, it's all more or less the same as far as cutting since the hardwood part of plywood is just a veneer.

Store it on edge with scrap lumber underneath to avoid water wicking and it should be fine as long as stored indoors.

I'd buy all I could

I'd also put boards under it and stack it flat.
If you do stand it up it should be absolutely vertical. Any lean and it will bow.

Build some fantastic cabinets uppers and lowers for the shop. You could also use it on the walls.

I'd buy a truckload, but I don't know where to put it all.
I've got plenty of ideas on things to build (cabinets, storage, etc) now to find the time to do it all:headscrat
Thanks for the input guys!
