Glad you are ok on the flooding (lack of of it).

Wow, turning off the river. Reminds me of the 1984 movie "Up the Creek". I forget why the river is dry, but one of the doofus characters says: "Where's the river?" then the water starts again and he says: "There's the river!". Blonds and ***** sure made the movies good back then.

I forget exactly, but those are pretty close to what he says. 1984 was a long time ago and there were lots of Coors Light beer involved in the 1980s... 3.2 beer was legal at 18 years old back then and we took advantage of that every chance we could.

Cleaning the lodge of mold doesn't sound like a fun time. Shutting the AC off and closing the doors tight in Tennessee in the summer doesn't sound like a very wise move.

Here in Colorado, one of my sister's college roommates was from a southern state. She was the last roommate to leave for Christmas break. She made sure to turn off the heat before she left. She later said: why would we pay to heat the place if we are not here?

sorry to hear you are having more than a little rain. hopefully you and your friends an neighbors are ok cause even though I don't watch the news regularly I saw a few clips of some nasty stuff going on in your state.

too bad trailer wasn't ready to load up your stuff so you could start your basement project a bit early. how's the chicken coop coming along or did you finish it up and just waiting for chickens now?

Uncle Willie, I think I'm going to buy a surplus army duck.

Kirk, guess what it's still doing here.

Drives, its wet here but we are not having near the problems some other communities are having, I feel bad for what they are dealing with.
The trailer roof dose not leak I just wanted to reseal it as a preventative maintenance measure, most of the basement is in the trailer already.
I am taking pallets apart for the 1x6 boards, I am lining the inside of the coop with them. We got such a late start that we couldn't find the chicks we wanted so I'll continue working on it in my spare time and it will be ready by spring when the new chicks arrive.

I have most of the camera wires ran through the ceiling as well as some data cables and the wiring for the 21 can lights. I have three more circuits to run for outlets then I can start on the basement cieling.

Donnie has been on vacation this week so I have been doing his pickups and deliveries.

These are finished racks if you look through them you can see my return load of raw racks.

While I was in Chattanooga I went to general shale and picked up three bags of mortar mix, I need it to finish setting the basement windows.

We also went to Harrison and picked 300 lbs of pears.
20210827_125447.jpg
Pat's cousin has two trees and this year was a bumper crop.
20210826_155207.jpg
I made a couple of pickers that thread onto a paint pole to help pick the pears.

It took about an hour to pick the 300 lbs, now Pat is making pear preserves and the rest are in the shop waiting to be made into wine.

Nice picking tool.

In South Africa we ate a lot of prickly pears or cactus fruit, my dad had an awesome bent wite picker, both for reach and to reduce direct contact till the micro thorns werebrushed off.

A good tool really is priceless

Grizz, It was a standard paint roller when I started.
I have several recipes for jelly and wine for prickley pear and I have a cactus that puts on buckets of fruit so I'm going to try them as a substitute for prickley pears.

Tony, I'll let you know when they are done and you can come and sample them, the preserves are fantastic, I like to put a little peanut butter and some pears on a tortilla and make a roll up.

I'm getting ready to go to the cruise in, downtown Cleveland today. There was close to 900 cars there last month according to the registrar.
Then to the lodge for a double degree. People wonder why I'm so slow with my projects, here's the reason.

Don’t think I’ve heard of pear preserves or pear wine. The preserves sound good, is the wine pretty sweet? Assuming you have tried it of course.
Any plans to can some of those pears, my mom used to can pears when I was a kid.

My ex-wife used to make pear sauce, like apple sauce. Very tasty. She would can this too.

I bet both preserves and wine are great!

My ex-wife had an attachment on her KitchenAid mixer that looked liked like a meat grinder, but was for fruit. maybe a juicer? The Stems, seeds and peels would come out the end as a plug and the juice/pulp went out the bottom. It made it very easy to do because you didn't need to peel all of it. Her mixer was the biggest they sold back then, just short of the commercial size.

Jay & S&A,
She chips the pears then adds sugar and they set in the fridge for 24 hours then she adds a little cinnamon and some cloves and then cans them. They come out tender and in a very heavy syrup, fantastic on pancakes.

Theres about six quarts in this pan

This is the the finished product

The wine is sweet, there wont be much sugar added as the pears are extra sweet this year.

Thanks Drives, we have a place here called Linda's Produce, I stopped by there and bought a load of tomato boxes, they sell them for 25 cents each. We parked the truck next to the tree and Pat and I went to work, it dosnt take long but we were soaked by the time we were finished.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm pancakes with pears! that sounds really good!

One year my mom's peach preserves didn't gel. We put it on ice cream! Actually, my mom never really got the preserves to gel no matter what fruit it was (peach, strawberry, sour cherry). So all of them ended up on ice cream or soaked pancakes.

I bet a waffle with a scoop of fresh vanilla ice cream smothered in those pear preserves would be to die for!

Sweet pear sipping wine! My ex-MIL kept a bottle of plum wine in the pantry, she would take a swig off it every once in a while as she cooked. Not a nip, a f-ing SWIG. Kept the cook happy.

I don't drink any more, but I sure miss the tasty kinds of alcohol.

If you take a couple big spoonfuls of the pears and microwave them before you slather them over your ice cream.......to die for!
I dont drink a lot but I have fun making anything and I have been able to spend a little time since retirement making wine and actually picking the fruit and doing it all from scratch. I pick wild blackberries in the woods and make wine from them, anyone can buy fruit or juice and make it that way.
I'm just weird that way.

That's why we like to make things, we like the process, the doing, the figuring out how parts.

Why climb the mountain? Because it's there.

Food/cooking is nice because you get to enjoy the results and you get to share them while you are at it.

HJ, all this talk of pancakes and waffles with fruit topping makes me wish I had made pancakes for breakfast instead of having cottage cheese with blueberries. Oh well there’s always tomorrow!

Live in the south there’s a good chance you’ve had pear preserves.
Just had this morning about all the rain up there and now Ida. A friend and I was planning a trip to Nashville this weekend but not sure now.

So, I went to the shop this morning to clean up some of the mess and!
20210829_124534.jpg
I got ahold of the wrong piece of angle iron.
20210829_125145.jpg
Thanks to a safety course I saw on another members page, I knew what to do!
20210829_141150.jpg
I got busy washing my wine making stuff.
20210829_144345.jpg
Then I started cutting pears, I usually quarter and seed them then cut off any bad spots. When I get a large dishpan full of pieces I wash them and run them through a food processor, this makes a great slurry to work with.
20210829_175026.jpg
I got two 5 gallon buckets today, I probably have enough to make another 10 gallons. I put them in a fridge for tonight when I get the rest of the pears processed I'll put it all in the big barrel with the rest of the ingredients. Hopefully I'll get to finish tomorrow.
