Usually I can secure one end then I screw two 2x4s together to pinch the other end then pull it until its flat but the leader wires on the top and bottom are shorter than the two in the center so it puckered, it will do for now, the chickens can't eat flowers now.

I got to work on the shed today almost totally uninterrupted!
20230415_190414.jpg
I had to dig down through the tree roots to set the blocks.
20230415_190354.jpg
I'm using pallet lumber everywhere except for the three treated posts.
20230415_192122.jpg
I got the first rafter up before I quit just to see what it looked like.
20230415_194150.jpg
I'm hoping to get tin on it tomorrow!

I got all of the tools out and started on the roof, then the drizzle started, I tried to tuff it out but it was steady and I was soaked in about 30 minutes so I put up the tools and went to the shop.
20230416_195931.jpg
I started disassembly of the Yerf Dog! The front cowel needs to come off to expose the electrical and to get access to the brake and accelerator and there cables. I need to inspect things!
20230416_195938.jpg
After it's running I will redo the mounts for the crash bar, two muffler clamps ain't gonna cut it!
20230416_195949.jpg
The PO threw the parts at it big time so I'm thinking it has a wiring problem.
He put a stator, a coil, a regulator, and a couple other items, doesn't look like he replaced the cdi box, that could be it! But I'll get a battery in it and start testing, probably won't be until next weekend, I'm going back to the shed roof tomorrow.

Best of luck with the new ride and loving the positive attitude that IT WILL RUN.

I also like the shed and even better that you found the materials for next to nothing.

By the way an old saying up her about the rain. There is never bad weather just bad clothing choices but I’m like you and usually don’t do work outside when it is raining especially if there is something to do inside.

Thanks Drives, it will run, soon!
I bought the metal for the shed pre covid so that cost is long gone and was fairly cheap, other than that three treated 4x4s are all I had to buy. The guy that put up my last carport left me several cases of screws and hardware, he said it had been about six month since he cleaned out his truck.

I did get some work done today before I got interrupted.
20230417_144305.jpg
I'm cutting tongue and Grove joints into the rafters so that it will look like an old barn on the inside.
20230417_144318.jpg
I got down to the last board and my skill saw locked up, Then the bil wanted me to help him unload 300 steel shelves, I drove the tractor, he humped the shelves! So I borrowed his skill saw for tomorrow! Had to be at the lodge at 6:00 so it was a short day.

Yes,
20230417_144305.jpg
I put one under the first rafter already, I'll add something to truss them just not sure what yet, plus some stiff legs under the ridge beam.
I got stuck helping the bil and Josh today so no progress on my stuff.
Tomorrow Josh and I are supposed to install some fence posts but someone borrowed the auger and hasn't returned it yet, so I may get to work on the shed!
20230418_103932.jpg
I did get to relax for about 10 minutes.

I worked on the shed this morning.
20230419_175418.jpg
I got the joists in place and made a simple stiff leg type of brace.
20230419_175429.jpg
I'll put some framing at the top and bottom of the rafters.
20230419_175615.jpg
I have something in mind for the brace!
20230419_163353.jpg
This afternoon I helped Josh clear up some spots on his property.
20230419_163355.jpg
One of his friends stopped by to haul the stuff we cleaned up to the back side of the property, we did four loads. And we aurgered in the corner posts for the garden and concrete them in, we are hoping to stretch wire around the garden.

Did you buy or borrow chicken skit from neighbors with 100,000 chickens or just using your kids batch?

I made our garden area about 5 times as big so we’ll see if we can get it planted and produce sone good eats.

Siestas are great recharge

Any local sources for cow dung? We used to put a mix of cow and hog. Chicken might be a bit hot, so go easy with it when you do that. The cow/hog mix used to sit in the pile for a year before we mixed it in.

It it coming together Kirk,
I'm spending a lot of time getting the garden shaped up, this is the first year for it so there is a lot to do.
20230420_152138.jpg
20230420_152142.jpg
The biggest thing is putting up fence to keep the critters out.
20230420_152201.jpg
We got it pulled tight.
It got too hot, so it's siesta time, we'll water later tonight.

I scored a LOT of 6' chain link, so made a hog pen out of it, 60'X24', hot wire on inside about 4" up and 3" out from fence.

Our soil was terrible, maybe 1" deep, then clay or sand, depending where.

Got 25 to 70# pigs at auction in fall, cheaper, then killed in spring at 220-240#.

Few years of that and soul is a foot deep and rich. They till AND fertilize!

Fallow for a few years and becomes a garden.

BUT, last couple years, deer are going right over 6' fences!

Kirk, I can get all I want but the chicken litter will be right by fall, after we run a round if greens off we will spread it and till in, by spring we will be ready.

AZ, that's a fine set up, I really like the no step wire, I did an acre with it at my last place.

He'll pig, I have my eye on a trailer load of 6' chain link, I'm hoping to make a deal on it for a new chicken run. I've had pigs and I cant have them here, my property is chert with a little clay on top it doesn't work up like yours did, beside, I don't want to deal with the escape artists, lol.

so you had a garden on the house side of the fence and now you are making a bigger one across the road?

that spot across the road might be 2 or maybe 4 times bigger than my 5 (total) or so planting areas.

what are you planning on planting?

i'm not positive what we are planting yet, but for sure we'll plant a few sun gold (yellow cherry) tomatoes, basil cause we love our caprese salads (we add good mozzerella and oils).

maybe keep up those siestas and you might have more energy especially on those super hot days.

cheers!!!

AZ, it ain't a bad view!
Drives, there are red and white onions, bell, jalipino, and banana peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, okra, roma ll green beans, pickling cucumbers, already in the ground. The tomatoes are still in the green house, we are also going to put out Ambrosia sweet corn and moon and stars watermelons on this property,
The Neighbors want to get together and plant a community garden, so,
20230421_064714.jpg
We may be tilling this piece of property and putting another garden in. I have seed that I have collected and I would like to plant them also.

JIm,
Everything is looking great.
That's interesting about a community garden. They have a few around where I grew up. Mostly people there don't have the room for a garden or the proper space. It appears that everyone has lots of space for their own gardens. What's the idea behind creating a community garden?

I got the rest of the body off of the Yerf Dog.

I found the problem with the brakes and they work fine.
20230422_112345.jpg
I have had this winch sitting on the shelf for years, now it has a home!
20230422_173946.jpg
I can't help myself, I don't like stock steering wheels, I have a horn button kit somewhere!
I'm going to push it outside and pressure wash it tomorrow and flush the fuel system. I would have done it today but we had to pass out flyers at Main Street car show, there were close to 600 cars there today.

Kirk that was my thought also and I belive it came from up north, all of the bolts have heavy rust in the threads, like they were exposed to salt and it was definitely stored outside!
The bushings and suspension are solid, looks to me like kids beat on it.
Main Street is put on by the City, they block off down town around the Cort house once a month, it took three of us almost an hour to pass out flyers.

It will just be the Neighbors, no outsiders!
I have a veggie garden. With the exception of the Lady of the garden. No other neighbors are interested. Suddenly, all of them were interested when there were shortages. None of them knew how long it takes to grow food and how much work it takes.

I tried to help but they really weren't that interested. I got a lot of they would just die in my yard comments. One neighbor tried to get her gardeners to plant veggies for her. They were a typical blow and go lawn service. That same neighbor has inferred my garden was the community garden. Whoops...rant.

My brother has a completely different situation. He lives in the SF bay area. His neighbors on Sundays would put out baskets of fruit and veggies. The neighbors would go from house to house essentially shopping.
My brother said there was no plan to do this. It started with a couple of neighbors and just grew. No one over took anything. They even had a system that if you needed some extra fruit or veggies you would have a bag with your name on it. Pretty cool neighborhood.

Your garden sounds like fun. Maybe a little gazebo where you can all gather for a salad.

It was good to just be out with Pat, I hate shopping but I like being alone with her.

We have been getting ants in the kitchen, it's an every spring thing, I got under the house and drilled a hole into each bay through the box joist between the floor joists, the wall is the original back porch so it's concrete floor and can't be accessed any other way. Anyhow, I mixed up two gallons of ant juice and sprayed into each hole, then I sprayed the block and the ground in the crawl space, then I sprinkled ant sprinkles around the foundation, then I caulked every seam in the kitchen. I hope that works! This time!
Then I mowed the lawn. Then I cleaned up some of the shop and put some tools away.
Had lunch, went to the office and printed out the wiring diagram for the yerf dog, then Josh and I went to look at some equipment.
20230424_174404.jpg
We bought a bush hog, a three point tiller, and a bottom plough, we have to pick them up tomorrow after 4:00, then I went to lodge for practice, we have an annual inspection coming up. Got home and had supper, now I get to take a brake!

I hate ants. I made an agreement with the ants. They don't come into the house and I don't spray them in the yard. Seemed to work for years. Then they decided to violate the agreement. Now, it's all out war.
I found that Diatomaceous earth is very effective to get them to move on. It's a white powder so when the neighbor's ask what it is. I say either cocaine or anthrax.

Jim: you didn’t mention which kind of ants but guessing little moisture ants and not the bigger carpenter ones? We seem to get them (small moisture ants) inside our home when temps move up again after winter usually in spring (yep we have a few now) and early summer.

My wife is the grim reaper to ants so within a few days they are back outside. Diatomaceous earth is one method that we use outside anround perimeter and we found some professional granules on Amazon but those little plastic terro traps work pretty good too. If you just want to nuke them the spray can of terro works quickly and doesn’t need much and they die almost instantly. The granules from Amazon the little ants take back to their nest and supposedly it wipes out that nest.

Here’s a few pics if you need other options for yours but sounds like you’ve done this before.

They are the tiny ants,
In the south they are called (piss ants) My problem is they are coming under a concrete slab that I can't readily access. I have a bag of DE that I bought a couple of years ago when fleas took over the yard, I may try to make a canister that I can discharge diatomaceous earth through a nozzle, the only access to the bottom of the slab is through a ¼" hole drilled in the foundation. I'm thinking the dirt settled under the slab and they are in the void between. There are no ant hills outside the house in that area. I do appreciate the ideas guys!

I have experienced the same problem for years. Inside, I set out the Terro traps if I see any. Outside, I walk the perimeter of the house spraying Ortho insect killer at the junction of the house and the yard, while carefully looking at the side of the house. Sometimes, I find a trail of ants going up the side of the house to a window sill. Those things can get through incredibly small spaces! Of course if I see that, I spray the trail and the sill. Usually after a couple of weeks, the problem disappears till the following year. Good luck!
