I haven't been by it in years, but on Dixie Hwy. in No. Miami Beach (FL), there is a locksmith. For his calling card, like pawnshops have three brass balls arranged in a triangle, barbershops have in-motion striped poles, this locksmith has a huge floor-standing safe sitting in the front of his shop.

I always thought it would be interesting to pull-in jump-out, and open the safe, and leave a bottle of spirits inside before closing it, and driving away.

Maybe one of Ady's 1/2cup QST castings too. With a Q-code to his GJ postings.

I keep my QST casting in the bedroom, and it makes me smile every time I see it. So-far, the wife hasn't objected.

Ok, I'll bite. Why don't you build hot rods anymore?
Well, before I moved most times my ex wife would bring my dinner plate to the shop because I lived there. I never did much more than quickly mow the grass, it wasn't really a lawn! I never worked on the house or anything else. I had to get back to my shop.

Driftpin, that would be very cool, then go to half cups page and leave a welcome to the lock smith!

I got to thinking about the safe job and decided I needed a jack.
20240109_115527.jpg
This is the one that I took out of the arbor press.
20240110_130005.jpg
I cleaned it up and added a scuff bar to the side, then painted it.
20240110_130042.jpg
I got into the scrap bin and found enough stuff to make this foot?
20240110_130055.jpg
That gets me down to about 1â…›", I can get that under the hinge plate on the front.
20240110_131526.jpg
I have a box full of 1¼" chrome ball bearings, I think I can roll it out the front door on them.

Gotta love a clever plan. Nicely executed!

Jeff, I have to think these things through in my head, my bil' plan is to roll it out balanced on a floor jack, raise the dump trailer all the way up, tie a chain to it and let the trailer down, this will pull the safe over on its side. He will get someone hurt.

Prospector, thank you I try!

I went to the Dr. this morning, so I drove by the shop where the safe is at and got some measurements. Donnie has a pallet jack that is only 27" wide, the narrowest doorway in my path is 33" so after we rotate the safe on the ball bearings we can set it on the pallet jack and roll it out the door, I hope!

Andy, I was worried that the bottom would be framed like the top, Alex suggested that I take another piece of plate steel with me to put on the bottom. Now that I have the pallet jack, I really only need the ball bearings to move it back about two ft. so I can turn it in the doorway, the shop owner said he was going to remove the wall in the hallway so it's getting easier every day!

I need to go to harbor freight today for some supplies, I think I'm going to buy four casters to weld on the bottom after I get it home, that will make moving it easier when I sell it.

I will be curious to see what happens with the ball bearings under the safe, it will either work splendidly or not. I would almost want to make some sort of edge on the plate you are bringing so they can’t rapidly escape from the bottom of the safe. Could be a great YouTube video.

Strouty, Im still undecided on the best course, there may already be a recess on the bottom.
20240105_124237.jpg
If you look at the side of the safe you can see the frame, it's about a â…›" recess, the bottom is probably the same way. I'll have enough stuff with me to go either way.

Jeff I'm going to go with 800 lbs, I really don't have a clue but It just looks heavy, hopefully I can find a scale to weigh it because we do need to know.

Larry, I will get as much as I can, I may see if my Nephew will go and film it for me.

I am going to get everything organized tomorrow, I was going to do that today but we had high winds and rain today so Pat and me went grocery shopping instead!

I bet more than 800, there is a lot of steel and probably some concrete. If there is a similar recess it might work, it is tough to figure out what is best until it is obvious, usually when it is too late. Just watch your fingers and toes. If we were a bit closer I would loan you some of my Hilman rollers, they would move it with ease once you get them under it.

Well, we arrived at the location of the safe at 11:00 sharp this morning. The man had removed the wall as promised.
20240114_120555.jpg
Dude grabbed one corner and I grabbed the other and we spun the safe while it was sitting on the floor, there was saw dust everywhere so we got lucky.
20240114_120618.jpg
That part went to easy.
20240114_120555.jpg
We put the bottle jack under the corner and jacked it up, stacking wood blocks as we went up.
20240114_121410.jpg
Then we just rolled the pallet jack in and jacked it up off the blocks.
20240114_124016.jpg
Things were going fast so I didn't get as many pics as I wanted, but we tilted the dump trailer up and hooked the cherry picker to the pallet jack with a chain, then we layed the steel plate down between the trailer and the sidewalk, Dude jacked up the cherry picker and I steered the pallet jack, we stopped once and adjusted the chains.
20240114_124007.jpg
After it was in the trailer we put four wood blocks under the pallet jack and let it down, this kept it solid on the floor. To this point took 41 minutes!
20240114_141456.jpg
When we got home I picked the jack and the safe up with the tractor and set it in the shop. Two hours total time. It went as smooth as moving a card board box!

I've been too busy with other things to work on the safe, dang life stuff! We have changed from ATT to Spectrum internet and with my ocd, I apologized to Colby, the tech that installed the new system beforehand but told him it would need to be installed my way, he grunted a little at first but complied! It took most of the day due to all the ice and temps in the 20's. It took about an hour to get his extension ladder off of the roof of his van and chip the ice out of the tracks. Yesterday we spent the day shopping for equipment that would work on the new system and returning the old equipment to ATT. Not really exciting stuff to post but it is what it is. Today the exterminator is coming to kill these gosh awful ants, Pat and I have fought them on and off since we have been here and I'm tired of it so I called out the big guns. I'm sure it's going to generate more jobs to put on the list!
Today its 18 degrees again, this is our winter.

We drove down the main road to get a couple pics of the snow! On the mountains.
I'll post more when I get done being an adult and finish these adult jobs.

Well, the exterminator came and we pulled a piece of trim from a window where Pat found some sawdust type debris a couple days ago.

Yep, termites! Yikes! David said he would be back Tuesday to start treating them. Where they are located is a concrete slab floor on a block foundation so to help access the area, I have to remove a piece of the drywall so they can drill through the floor. Sounds extreme but really the easiest solution. More to follow.

Hey Jim, that's Tennessee for ya. As you probably know, you can put a tomato stake in the ground in June and have termites in September! Treating under the concrete is affective. Good luck killing them. Stay warm, it was-2 here yesterday
55, your so right, they are everywhere. When we bought this house it was a bank repo that had been empty for years, during the renovation we found traces but no active termites. We have been watching since that day knowing that they will be back.

The bug team showed up today, I removed the piece of drywall and pulled the insulation. David inspected the wall and determined his course of action while the others got busy outside.

It was caught early so no real damaged.
20240123_175727.jpg
This 2x4 got a little surface damage.

This stud from under the window got the worst of it so it came out. The boys were under the house for about an hour total, they came out several times to refill there canisters, then they put bait cans all around the house.
