Ok it rained last night and on and off today so I got to spend the day in the shop working on the lawnmower hood. Got a little closer today. The Ferguson had an escutcheon plate on the hood for the headlights but I didn't get them so I filled one of the holes and ground it smooth then blasted them 98325f542a6630c776bcff735e96c669.jpgaed294de2d885b9a2d95d9d9458cec72.jpg93efbbfaba0803c0047041a94f78760c.jpg7c75bf9f480c0ebf97bc047dfbf41ab0.jpg48813fc6b8ff796b4e6748957dff0be5.jpg1979c6fcc9e9c735ca8b52f3252ae35c.jpg64b9beca45f5a48f1708f44fdc56c223.jpg

Second installment
I put the side panels on the hood and got the bottom valance which was rolled in ball and beat it out flat on the anvil. I decided to cut the flanges off and welded it solid to the side panels. Squared it up and made a grill for it.
Once I get the front hinge figured out I will know where the hood is going to set then I will add to the rear of it to match the dash curve.
It is supposed to rain again tomorrow so maybe I'll get done.cc7c5cf140f7cc2e4dbe629e9c71122d.jpg73cf323fb7273a00bc0a119d72d0b247.jpg067273ad39b01423c5aa83ee86cfcef8.jpgfe48ed3bcb4a3963965e0fba55a11172.jpg

I will extend the hood back and make it follow the dash contour. Until I got the front finished and get a tilt hinge mounted I wasn't sure how long the final length would be. I'm just guessing now. I cut about 15" off in the beginning to simulate about what the old hood length was but this one is farther forward.

JIM: Man you've been busy. sorry to hear that an inversion table does you more pain than good. there is definitely a reason why some are more expensive and after trying about 10 of them i bought an invertalign that Teeter Up owns now and for the last 12 years I haven't seen the good chiropractor I was seeing 2 to 4 times a month before i starting hanging.

Wow that tractor hood is coming along nicely so looking forward to seeing how you finish it up.

speaking of great looking improvements that new brick/block planter wall you built looks great (plumb and square too). i'm wondering what you put down for a base cause I use cement and occasionally crushed rock/gravel? no mortar? nice work on getting the downspouts to drain through the wall too.

overall WELL DONE SIR and keep up the inspiring work.

I had 4 vertebra fused in my neck the Doc wanted to do the 5th but would have had to go in through the back to do it so we wait until it hits critical mass. Then they did total bilateral knee replacements and now they want to work on three vertebra in my lower back I'm holding them off on that because I think the left knee is failing and I dont need the pain right now. So since I fell apart I havent been able to invert too well. I'm just a mess but I'm a happy guy and having fun with what I got.
Next installment on the hood coming up.
The ground here is chert with about three inches of top soil so basically its stone so I chiseled out a trough and set most straight onto the chert and added sand where there were dips there are 142 blocks and I used three 50 lb bags of sand and had some left over. I am hoping it outlasts me and pat. I have a small square grill that I'm going to try to put in front of the drain pipe, I want to hinge it so it will open fully on down pours but shut to keep critters out.

It rained again today so first I went and got a haircut then stopped and picked up 30 lbs of hamburger and 30 lbs of pork, I'm not a hoarder this is my normal MO I only go to the grocery store about once a month.
Then off to the shop, first I called Dennis Carpenter and tried to order a chrome trim kit for my 70 F100 but it has been discontinued so the search continues.
I got the back half of the hood welded on and shaped so I took it apart and it is going to sand blast tomorrow and back for body and paint work on friday.f747bfadf11b9d30319a61f8766dd4ff.jpgf60519b9aed3bdeae2e7509eb7d3c69c.jpg1b1c08b0b44ab0d5070c4360a1b7c4e6.jpg1a8ad8447e40ea2c19898672d8a863a8.jpg3d873449da139b16d2a82605d4bf003b.jpgc1c837ed254c6e3aa01abb5fa5530540.jpg96d6bb8f2b2e99473392b436660460d2.jpg2d8e7164fed26012477355ed0193e9c5.jpg13d7cb2a8d94f9ae33e5d1d04a0e9e50.jpg3f1b456e00fc1154f7e4c3cdc8a19ad0.jpg

JIM: tractor is looking great!!

also nice to know you were thinking of the critters when you put out the drain pipes cause they can sure be a nuisance if they get in places they don't belong.

carry on and do what you do which seems like a lot especially for a guy with a fused back!!

Didn't get much done in the shop today they are calling for a frost tonight so I dropped the mower hood at the sandblasters and went to lowes and bought some tomato baskets and a roll of painters plastic to cover the plants.
The powder coat shop needed 4 center caps powder blasted and painted to match the wheels they powder coated so I got them done this afternoon. If they pass inspection tomorrow I will start the body work on the mower hood.ed024170776ddfcc302013b4da0214a3.jpgf5b9c6d4e2745792ca6168647c88d5e7.jpg2167526ac9df84d856452243915f23b4.jpgae11c096217f16482ec92ce3666952a3.jpgfdec6e48d375c128fbd2a0a0abc5a731.jpg

Miss the pontiacs.
Thanks we have been kicking some names around here. There may be some vinyl lettering in the works. Welcome.

Made a new shop chair today. A buddy had this cart he picked up on the road a while back someone had hit it, the front was mangled so I cut it in half.
I did some metal work on the hood hammered & dollied on it a while that thick steel is tiring. Put a coat of mud on it then called it quits for the night.78c1e872913c987c6b320b1adc33b610.jpg5348871f2e8a82ce14dcb301d24c50e9.jpgbfd0ab4e9393ade0136ca52b0384f247.jpg

I can see that this is not your first rodeo with bondo (nice and smooth)

You talk frost while I'm fixing my shop cooler because they are promising triple digit heat around here :lol_hitti

JIM: I thought Tennessee was known for it's hot muggy weather, but guessing maybe you are in the foothills or maybe the mountains since you've got frost and cold weather still?

that looks like a lot of work to save the plants and good for you for doing that to preserve all your hard work.

interesting chair to be certain. also did you use a few of that cart's parts for the grill on your new JD's HOOD? hood is looking great.

hope your weather warms up a bit.

Yep, I've slung my share of mud for years I did amature paint and body work at home. Made it through some tough times in the 80 when Jobs were hard to come by in my garage painting.
This weater is some crazy stuff. It made it down to 33 last night, glad I covered the plants. High today 62. Should be 80s.
Kev
Yes it was before it got hit by a car. It will live on. I have an old hoveround I may moterize it later.

Drives
Its 49 degrees at 11:00 that is cold for here for this time of year. The rule around here is plant root veggies in February and anything else after april 15. It should be in the 80s.
Normally I'm in short pants only after April but I'm still wearing long pants and ran the heat in the shop yesterday.
You have a quick eye, yes it is, I was able to flatten it with my arbor press as it was bent really bad.

That Tractor hood is really looking good. I really like following along with everything your doing. Up near Lancaster PA we got down to 31 last night, 12:15 now and its only 41. Its really crazy with the virus and the weather. Strange days indeed.

Stayed in the shop all day it was just too cold and windy to go out. I got a lot done on the hood today, once you start doing the body work you really find out how bad or good you did on the fabrication, this one was just ok the lower section was beat up real bad so I did have to dollie it quite a bit.9079ae1303fbd5ab872d9367daf4708f.jpg69854e20b48d6ec98cd61891ef46b0c6.jpg186e98d3e8aca0d60c6fbd4c2c0e4dc8.jpgc42200006f56c9b65006f66cb0b24156.jpg

Jim: i'm guessing you are friends with the powder coating shop owner and workers? is the hood heading there for a JD green maybe with a yellow stripe or are you painting it yourself?

sorry to hear you have to replant, but with all the work you do to avoid frost damage it looks like you are home outside in the garden and yard as well as inside the shop.

here's to another great day!!!

Yep they are my buddies, when they are stuck they know I'm a call away. They try to grab everything from me and coat it but the hood has bondo in it so it cant be cured in the oven at 400 deg. they are going to help me with some graphics for the hood

I went and got the tractor/loader to haul fill dirt to the low spots around the yard it took several yards to get them to where I think they need to be. I started raking it out and leveling it, this is going to take a while. I am going to go get another load of top soil to finish these areas and get them seeded. I am going to try and fabricate a drag to pull behind the mower to help with the leveling of the dirt.
We washed and painted the new slab on top of the hobit house today. Then we went to the shop and swept and cleaned the floor, then we moved the 64 chevy cab back to the main shop so we can put the 70 ford in the fab shop to start disassembly
Drives. Yes we have a great family dynamic in this neighborhood, I stopped twice to do favors for the neighbors on the way to get the tractor and it's only one driveway from mine.20200515_195435.jpeg20200515_195327.jpeg20200515_195243.jpeg20200515_191114.jpeg20200515_191117.jpeg20200515_195421.jpeg20200321_170252.jpeg20200321_163501.jpeg

Funny, I spent the day riding my tractor today too moving dirt and digging up a section of grass. And I got sunburned :lol_hitti

Yard and projects are coming along nicely JIM! The top of the hobit house looks like it's ready to stand up to anything coming its way.
